Anyone have a doctor who doesn't like protein shakes?

Im not as far post op as you (only at one month) but I don't think your surgeon is at all crazy to ask you to focus on protein dense foods. I'm looking through my books and at three months is time to replace the shakes with protein dense foods. I am also a revision and losing slowly but that should not get you down. If you look at many of the successful diet plans they are protein dense foods. If you are taking the shakes in morning for convenience, try to stop long enough to have a egg (boil it the night before) or yogurt or pc of cheese with a little cereal with protein in it or sprinkle protein powder in your cereal. Another way to get some proteins in to get your quota is protein2o water from GNC. There is 15 g of protein in the 16 oz bottle of water. It makes sense to me to get your digestion moving in the morning with foods and take your shakes in the afternoon. Just a perspective you may have missed in your discussion with the surgeon. Talk to your NUT to get an understanding of where their mind set is going. We are still trying to work on our mind sets. I have been working on my mind set for 25 years and believe me, lots has changed since my first WLS. But I have not been able to eat any foods for two years now, so eating like normal people is so exciting to me.

I'm week 4 and still on mushies...although the sample diet that came home with still has protein shakes on it, I'm mostly off them. I found that I was losing faster on "real" food, and I'm not having any problems getting all my protein in, with 6 teeny meals of eggs, tuna, salmon, shredded chicken, yogurt and Greek yogurt. I also noticed that carbs and calories were higher with shakes. 

Like you, I'm a revision and my weight loss is going slow, which is why I'm doing whatever it takes to get it going faster!

I still drink half a shake a day because food does not agree with me in the morning. Also, the shakes help me keep my total calories lower and allow me to get some fiber in my diet. I am at the point where I suffer terrible constipation if I do not get some fiber in my diet or drink Miralax, and I refuse to drink Miralax every day. While it is true that protein shakes may not keep you as satisfied, there is no reason to worry about that until it actually starts happening. I am still eating more than I need to be satisfied in order to meet my protein goal, so that does not concern me at this point.

While you should try to get more protein from food, please do not take your surgeons comment about total grams of protein per day seriously. It is really is important that you get adequate protein each day. If you do not, your body will start to consume your muscles for protein and you will lose more hair. I have done a pretty good job getting enough protein, but I can still tell that I have lost muscle mass. Losing too much muscle mass is a really big deal. My recommendation is to split the difference by reducing your protein shake consumption to 15 grams of protein per day and getting an additional 15 grams of protein from food. Once you are a bit further out from surgery, you can worry about getting off them completely.

My surgeon also suggested no more shakes after 3 months.  I couldn't wait to ditch the shakes and hope to never have one again :)

I do drink a shake every morning, because I find it hard to get solid food in. I have been relying on the Premier Protein a lot, because they are easy to grab running out the door. I find the ones I mix in the blender and add ice to feel like they have a little more substance to them.

I love my premier protein shakes! I have also discovered that I like the nectar protein also!

I had Dr Tim Thompson at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN and he said no shakes . I didn't drink one. I got to goal and still there 13 years later
