How many calories do you get in a day, working out and non? Just trying to get a feel for this and see everyone's differences. My weight is stalling so bad and just want to see if there's something different I can do. Thanks in advance for the feedback!

I see that you are about 6 months out. What does a typical day of eating look like for you? share your food diary and we can help more.

Most people at 6 months out eat between 600-800 calories a day. DO NOT eat more just because you exercise. That never works. Stay consistent.

By the six month mark, the average loss is around 50% of your excess weight. If you have not reached this yet, you do need to look at how much and what you are eating. Figure it out now to maximize your loss and help you reach your goal.

Good luck.

This is how many calories I ate/eat:

  • 1-2 Months After Surgery: I ate 500 calories a day
  • 3-6 Months After Surgery: I ate 600-700 calories a day
  • 7-9 Months After Surgery: I ate 800-900 calories a day
  • 10-12 Months After Surgery: I ate 1000 calories a day
  • 13-15 Months After Surgery: I ate 1200 calories a day to goal weight (I reached my goal weight at 15 months out)
  • Maintenance 16-30 Months After Surgery: I ate 2000-2500 calories a day
  • Maintenance: 31 Months After Surgery to Today: 1800-2000 calories a day

All of the above calories eaten were without exercise. I would not concern yourself with what calories are burned through exercise since those figures (no matter what the source) are not truly accurate. Exercise should be for the physical and mental benefits only. If interested, please see my profile page where I detail my experience with RNY.

Do you use a kitchen scale? Weighing everything is much more accurate than anything else, and it really helps keep me on track. I found that I was slowly heaping measuring cups more and more full. All those extra calories can really add up. I am eating between 700 to 900 calories a day right now. I try to stay below 800, but some days I go a little over.

I Eat an average of 800-900 calories a day @ just over 3 months out. The binder my surgeons office gave me says I should be aiming for 1200 calories, but I'm comfortable at 800-900.

I pay no mind to exercise calories burned.

I eat an average of 800-1000 calories a day at 3 months out regardless of whether I exercise or not. I tried eating less when I was first eating solid foods again, but I felt like I was starving. My weight loss since surgery hasn't been super speedy (38 lbs lost in the first 3 months), but it's at least still going the right direction!

Hi Chavon! I had surgery the week before you. My plan calls for me to stay at 600-800 calories throughout my weight loss period. I do not add calories for exercise and exercise at least 4 times per week. I usually come in around 650 calories but do try to go over 700 at least two times per week. I've noticed that I will stall when I'm UNDEReating. For example, this week I had to have a surgical procedure on Monday and percocet all week made me feel so nauseous that I only ate between 400-450 calories each day and have had no weight loss for a week. My plan is to hit 750 calories tomorrow and get things moving again.

Wow Time for me- you are doing great, one of things I love to look at are people's stats, they give me hope and keep me encouraged.  Have you experienced any stalls or surprises?  Congrats on all your hard work and weight loss!

Thanks, Beachybike!  I've only encountered a few mini-stalls -- 7-10 days without weight loss.  For the most part, it's been a steady progression, not a stair-step like many people report. The only surprise has been getting a bowel regimen to work and I've had a complication that required surgical intervention last week (a fissure!).  Other than that, it's been so much easier than I thought at the beginning.  First month was tough!

Good luck to you!!  I didn't check your profile before responding but I'll definitely be following you!!
