Not a great Surgeon checkup

I had my 3 month (which turned into a 4 month because of scheduling issues) checkup today and I'm so irritated!! I saw my surgeon's PA and she was asking what my goal weight was. I said he had never set one and I intended to ask him today about that. I asked if my weight loss was doing well and she said that it was on the low side. My surgery weight was 362, my weight today is 306. Personally I go by my starting weight of when I walked into their office in January at 377 but I get they don't go by that. But regardless she said that most people lose 20-30 pounds the first month and then 20 pounds every month after. I DID NOT NEED TO HEAR THAT.

I know I lost slowly the first month and it stressed me out so much but after that first month I've felt like I've been doing so well! I've been sticking to the diet and never cheated on it even once. Exercise is my huge hangup that I'm working on getting past but I'm so frustrated at her comments, I'm positive my surgeon would never have said anything like that because before my surgery he would never give me an amount of weight to lose a month or anything and that wasn't what I was getting at when I asked her that question. I've really been feeling like the 202 pound weight loss goal I set for myself was doable with what I've been doing. But now I feel like it's impossible! I left the office in tears.

So sorry that was your experience today. We're about four weeks apart on surgery days and my surgeon and NUT won't give me any hard numbers either. Our numbers are very similar though and mine both say they are happy with what they are seeing from me. So keep up the good work!!! And request never to see her again.

You're a guy?!?!?  Wow, that explains so much, LOL.

I just just want to go on record as saying that it just f'ing sucks that men lose so much more quickly than women! That is just so wrong on a cosmic level...

14 years out; 190 pounds lost, 165 pound loss maintained

Guys do lose faster... but, dang, you were dedicated!!!!

I wish I had kept a month to month loss chart... I guess, I do have that here... I am going to have to figure it out!

You are one of my heroes!

WOW Grim,

Sometimes it would be nice to be a guy even for just a little bit.  Now my surgery weight was 209 but it would have been nice to have those big losses in the beginning! I'm losing an average of 10.75lbs a month and boy would I like those numbers to be higher.

Melinda,

My doc and NUT told me that a loss of between 2-4lbs a week (8 - 16lbs a month) was a good amount to lose.  Now we hit stalls and what not so some months are lower than others, it's just part of the "game" so to say (not that weight loss is a game).  Now if you take your weight loss of 56lbs since surgery and divide by 4 months, you are averaging 14lbs a month!!!  That sounds AMAZING to me!!  Anyways, Melinda I think your doing a GREAT job and I hope you don't let this discourage you at all.  Keep up the hard work and be proud of the #'s you are pulling in, I mean heck when was the last time you lost that much a month? Probably NEVER!!!  Chin up and carry on!!  Have a wonderful weekend!! :)

Melissa

Hang in there.  You're doing great.  I too am a slow loser, but I don't let it bother me.  It will take as long as it takes to get to goal.  I refuse to put a timeline on it.  As long as I'm sticking to plan, I know that the weight will come off.  This isn't a "diet."  It is the rest of your life, so as long as you feel that you are doing all the right things, that is all that matters.  This is your journey.  Enjoy it.  It's remarkable!

It's especially not what I needed to hear today as what I was talking to her about was the depression I've been feeling. This conversation that my weight loss is slow definitely didn't help.

Plain and simple she is an asshole.  I highly doubt every one of their patients lose 20-30 the first month and then 20 each month after.

You have done an amazing job so far.  Since January you have lost 71lbs holy crap that is great.  If I were you I wouldn't let that ***** make me feel bad in any way at all.  You are following the plan and I bet you this time next year not only will you have met your goal of 202, but I have a feeling you will surpass it.

I would make sure you see your surgeon next time even if you have to demand it and let him know just how she made you feel.
