My labs after switching to the vitamin patch

I am going for this patch.  I reviewed my recent labs and am now wondering if there is a problem.  My Dr. said all labs were good but ... Last year my PTH was 21, my Vitamin D was 188 and my calcium was 9.7.  This yeat my PTH was 42, my Vitamin D was 82 and my calcium was 9.3!  Is something going wrong?  My ferritin was 218 last year and 141 this year.  I dont hve my dexa scan till December.  Can someone give me a little advice.  Thanks.

Looking at the date of your surgery, what is likely going on is simply that you are now far enough out from surgery but you're starting to see the true effect of the lack of vitamin absorption. It is pretty common for people have labs that look just fine for the first year (or so), but then show a steady downward trend after that (and they need to increase their vitamin supplements). That seems to be especially true with Vit D, iron, and B12.

I didn't need any iron for a couple of years after my RNY (I had a hysterectomy many years ago), but I noticed that my iron levels slowly, but steadily dropped for 3 years.  When I got the lab results from the third year, I knew I and to start an iron supplement.

How much Vit D and iron are you currently taking beyond what is in your multivitamin?

I take four of the Sundown Natural Perfect Iron @ 75 mg. each and 500 mg of Vitamin C chewable with the iron every night.  I also  take 2500 B12 sublingual (my number here was a high 1779 but the doctor seemed unphased) every night and a 50,000 Vitamin D supplement sporatically.  I should do better with that.  I would like to know what a good PTH is and a good vitamin D level and calcium as they are so inter related.  I am worrying about my bones.  I need both knees replaced soon and want good bones going in.  Thanks for responding.  Your input has been invaluable to me over the past three years.

Hi Lora.  I wondered if you have the results back yet on your calcium.  I am interested in your thoughts on the calcium patch especially, as that is the supplement I have the most trouble fitting in.

The doctors office left me a message yesterday and said it was "fine", but the lab doesn't have the actual numbers posted yet.

My calcium level was good: 9.6.

I need to do some more research on the PTH, VitD, calcium interaction, but I think I need to continue the extra dose of calcium in addition to the patch.  Srill, one dose of calcium pills (or a chew) is a LOT better than 4 doses evey day!

It is right above your response.  It was 9.6, so was fine.
