Calcium Question
A few weeks ago I posted about how when I had my dexa scan done, they said I had the start of osteoporosis. I put in a call to my dr. To see of there is anything more I can take..or do, now just waiting to hear back. The other day a friend told me that our bodies can't absorb calcium from food now, just from supplements. Is this true?
No, not true. The problem is that we don't absorb MUCH calcium -- from food OR supplements -- because the area of the intestine that primarily absorbs calcium has been bypassed.
So, we only absorb a small amount of the calcium from food AND from supplements (which is why we take so much calcium). Your body doesn't need 1500+ mg of calcium a day, but we need to take that much in order to absorb enough for what our body does need. We don't absorb much of that 1500mg, just as you won't absorb much of the calcium in the foods you eat.
