Post-op gas question

Hello, I had my surgery on Monday and everything went great! My question and concern is regarding the gas that I was told I would have. After surgery I was up and walking about 4 hours after the surgery was completed, and was very proud of myself. The day after surgery I was getting up and walking about every 2-3 hours but never passed any gas. Today I was discharged home (Monday surgery and discharged on Wednesday) but still haven't passed any gas and no BM. Should I be concerned or was this normal for anyone else? The only time I have burped is after sipping some water or protein drink. Thanks in advance for any responses.

I never had bad gas after surgery.  Took me 5 days post op to poop.

The surgical team  may have been able to evacuate most if not all the gas used in surgery.  Anything left would probably be evacuated via breathing or by emitting through the skin of your upper back.  If you don't have any gas, good.

Consider yourself lucky that the gas pains from surgery weren't bad, but continue to walk.   However, watch to make sure your bowls do wake up soon.   hopefully you will be passing gas soon which means they have woken up.   If you do not have had our a bowl movement by 1 week you should contact your doc to let them know.

I had terrible post-op gas.  I didn't pass any of it during the 4 days in the hospital, and it wasn't until my 3rd day home that I began to get some relief.  I was so bloated you could bounce a quarter off my abdomen.  I felt so much better after that.

Good luck.

That is exactly how I feel right now :/ Sooo uncomfortable and sharp pain under my ribs like when you were a teen in p.e. and got a sideache..

After all the threads about the horrible gas pains (especially in the shoulder area) I was dreading that part of it and was prepared to walk it off.  It never happened to me either.  It sounded very painful so I consider myself very lucky.  The rest takes several days to kick back in.

You are QUITE lucky. After my gallbladder removal surgery and my Lap-Band surgery, the pain I remember the most was in my shoulders. Now that I have a RNY scheduled, it is what I am dreading the most!
