Post op diet with special needs-thoughts?

Hi-I am a vegetarian and I do not eat eggs. I will be revising to RNY in a few weeks, so I am open to everyone’s thoughts. I was just wondering if anyone else out there is a vegetarian and how you balance your food post op. My dietician feels I will have to rely on protein shakes a lot for the rest of my life. Thoughts?

Do you eat beans? And nuts?  Another option is products like veggie burgers and Morning Star type products. I eat veggie burgers sometimes. Do you eat yogurt? I love the Fit and Lite Greek yogurts. 12 g of protein and only 80 calories.

Yes, I love beans and nuts! Dannon Greek Oikos triple zero has 15 grams of protein and it tastes good. I haven't tried veggie burgers, that's a thought. Thank you!

Perhaps lurking on a low carb forum might help you find some options.  There will be parts dedicated to vegetarian low carb.

I find this website very helpful although I've never posted or read the Vegetarian section.

Really I don't think you will have a problem getting in protein after the first few months... some veggie burgers as you know are dense so until you are chewing solids (8 week-ish on MOST plans) we tend to rely on dairy products and supplements. If yogurt, cheese, milk and whey proteins are not an issue for you (aka not vegan) then I think between those tofu, beans, you will make it through those first few weeks fine.

I am not a vegetarian but I often realize that an entire day of eating has been vegetarian. Now vegan would be hard in those first few weeks. The types of protein sources, density, amounts in both supplements and foods to near protein minimums with such a small capacity... very hard I think early on at least. IMHO.

No, I am not vegan, so I will take your advice. Thank you for your time and opinions.

Silken tofu is very soft.  You can scramble any kind of tofu like eggs.  If you eat dairy, cottage cheese is also super high protein, and you can blend it so it is smooth as well.  There are lots of options if you eat soy and dairy.

I follow a ketogenic diet post-op. I also have a diagnosis of binge eating disorder. Feel free to ask me about either!
