I am 4 months out and my hair is falling out. No surprise there, but I want to get my short cut shorter and would like to go blonder for summer. Has anyone colored their hair while it has been falling out?

Sure did! I never altered my every 4-5 week routine.

I chose not to color during the hair thinning stage because I figured my hair was already under enough stress but maybe it doesn't make any difference.  Friendly suggestion to ask a trusted salon employee making sure s/he knows you want to strip the hair lighter versus going darker.  Please let us know, too.

I did all the time. I do it myself using brands that do not irritate my scalp. Herbatint, or Naturatint.  Available in most health food stores.

Coloring your hair will not make it fall out, it might cause breakage but it will not make it fall out. My advice is if you want your hair to look thicker go with a darker color because dark hair usually looks thicker.

I had always colored my own, but just before surgery found a great hair stylist and told her about the upcoming surgery and what I had read about hair changes. She had had several other clients who had done the surgery and was very familiar with the side effects and has been a wonderful partner in all of this. My hair was already dry, but was even more so after surgery and when it started falling out went from wavy to straight. She continued to color it, did deep conditioning treatments on it, and has kept it in much better shape that I could have alone.

Timely post, I'm going to my salon today lol :) I'm planning on getting it colored. My stylist knows about the surgery and her BF had it done so she's aware of the effects on hair and everything. I trust her as Ive been going to her for 3 years now and she's never steered me wrong.

me!  And the pigments in the hair dye coat the hair shaft, making each hair a bit thicker.
