OSTEOPENIA - 6 YEARS POST OP 58 years old - long timers help Melting Mama etc......
Good Morning - I am 6 years post OP RNY, lost 135 pounds and am a rule follower. I take all recommended vitamins, calcium, supplements etc. good quality - Celebrate. I am post menopausal so my doctor expected no more than a 14% bone loss as my last scan was 2 years ago. WOW news today almost 20% bone loss in right and left hip leaving me at Osteopenia.
I exercise (walking, dancing hiking)
Now what? What particular supplement / drug will work to stop bone loss? Will I absorb it? Is there a liquid format? Has anyone else experienced this? Melting Mama you are like 15 year out - have you? Poet Kelley? Any long timers?
Thanks Melissa

I was recently diagnosed with Osteopenia. I have been researching vitamins that aid in the proper absorption of calcium and found that while Magnesium and Vitamin D are important, Vitamin K2 helps deposit the calcium directly into the bones and teeth. Often the extra calcium from supplements are deposited in the arteries which can cause cardiovascular problems. Here is a good article explaining it. I am going to try supplementing with K2 to see if my next DEXA scan improves at all.
Edit to add another article.

The second article I posted has amounts to take. Those of us who take rather large doses of D3 may need more K2 than the average person. There is not a toxicity level for K2. K3 is the dangerous one. If you take a blood thinner, like Warfarin, You can not take vitamin K without a doctor monitoring you.
Rocky, thank you another member asked about my numbers - had them drawn a year ago and darn I can't put my fingers on them. I have a call into PCP. I want to order the K2 from vita lady and also up my magnesium - in the article you sent the amount of k2 is in ug.... How does this convert? Thanks Melissa

Kathy, read the second article I posted to the OP. There is a connection with high doses of Vitamin D and K2.
Also, If your Vitamin D is a prescription, it is D2, and we don't absorb it well. We RNY folks need dry ( not suspended in oil) D3.
What Rocky said above.
You've been taking vitamins al along, but you don't say what your levels are. If you don't have the numbers, get them -- don't rely on a receptionist to tell you on the phone your levels are "ok." A whole bunch of things work together for calcium to get asorbed. And it may just be that you need more than most people.
