Quick Question
I too was on a 6 months pre-plan for my insurance plan. I went to a regular weight loss clinic during that whole time. My surgeon is at that clinic. It is a wonderful bunch. I had NUT's there that I saw every month. I was one that had to show I was doing what they worked with me on, but also had to be careful not to fall below the 40 bmi (35 if you have 2 co-morb's) So, as long as I was showing a little loss or at least no gain I was fine. Tell me not to loss is easy....but tell me not to gain was the hardest part. I was so scared I would loss to much and not qualify for surgery.
Anyway I see my NUT at every appointment. They answer any questions. As far as those 6 months prior. I was told to cut out white carbs. Measure everything. Track everything I ate/drank (myfitness pal is the best) and exercise even if it is just walking.
My plan called for a 2 week pre-op diet. It could be more if you had more to loss and it could be only 1 week if you was down around the 35 bmi range I was just under 40 so had to do 2 wks. At that point insurance had already approved me so I could loss as much as I could. As others have said all plans are different. Mine was 5-6 medifast products and unlimited 0 cal drinks, sf jello and popcycles and broth. It was really not to bad.
I am now 3 and 1/2 months out. Doing well. My weight loss has gone slow for me. Started 3 wks out with my first stall. But it is what it is and you just got to keep doing what your taught and hang in there. It does come off. I have a total of 57 lbs off. 36 since my surgery. It has just really started picking up in past couple of wks...so woohoo!!! 33 more lbs will get me to my WW goal my doctor set for me that I reachd 5/2011 but would like to get down about 15 more than that. It is doable and I will do it!!
Best of luck to you on this life changing event!!

I did the pre-op weight loss by myself, but my surgeon was happy that I'd lost weight.
My first step was to go through my cupboards and dump all the rice, pasta, potatoes, breads, etc., so I wouldn't bend to temptation.
I made my own menu focusing on protein first, started trying out various protein powders, and trying to walk more. Anything you can do will help.
For protein powders, try the Syntrax Nectar samples; the website has a package with about 13 different single-serving flavors at a reasonable price. I also use the GNC ultra-low or no-carb powders. There are unflavored powders (NOT tasteless!!) that you can add to various foods.
good luck.
I've been trying different Protein shakes..adding flaxseed and hemp oil..trying different fruit combinations..I'm good there. My issue, I think, is going to be clearing out foods from the kitchen. My boyfriend and his two children still want to eat "Normal" foods and I am going to be stuck looking at the Mac & Cheese and Potatoes and Rice and Juice and Cookies and Treats and Breads and AHHHHHH!
I'm a food addict.
