I'm three weeks post-surgery and a bit concerned.

I generally weight myself on Thursdays and Monday mornings.  The one I "count" in my log is Monday mornings.  Thursday is just to keep me in check.  I had surgery on May 18 and as of June 8 I was down 18 pounds.  Yeah me.

But, I got on the scale this morning for my check in and had gained two pounds.  This really worries me.  I can't imagine only being three weeks and a few days out and gaining two pounds.  How is that even possible?

I know the gastric bypass was the best choice for me since in the last year I have been diagnosed with Type II diabetes, high cholesterol and high blood pressure.  I've had sleep apnea for years.

Has anyone had this experience?  Did you still do okay with little blips along the way?

Thanks!

I never said it would be easy. I said it would be worth it.

A two pound gain can be a number of things...most likely NOT a two pound re-gain of fat.  Most likely it is water or fluid.  These can fluctuate in the body and can affect what the scale says.  I might suggest taking measurements as well as weighing yourself.  If the scale goes up and down a bit, but you're still shrinking, you know things are still going well.  Just remind yourself that weight loss is not linear!  Keep up all your good work!!

This is nothing and incredibly common. Please keep in the front of your mind that you are not even a month away from major surgery. Your body is still trying to figure out what the heck has happened while working on healing itself. Just because you had RNY doesn't mean you won't occasionally see some water weight show up. Especially if you are having trouble getting all your water in during the day. Your body panics and holds on to what it's got.

Having an official weight day is a really good idea and I was glad to see you post that. Mine is Tuesday. It was my surgery day.

You'll be fine. Keep working your plan and getting your fluids in and walking.

Just another reassurance that it is completely normal.

I weigh every morning -- and believe me, a million things can affect your weight by a pound or two even by a couple of hours.  Seriously.

No worries!

Where are you in your female cycle?  I personally gained 6 pounds in the first 2 days of my period, and that is on 400 cal a day diet.  So obviously not fat gain.  It was all water.  I would take a look at what you have done differently, see if its hormonal, and check your water intake.

Yes I did!  At 3 weeks I "gained" 2-3 pounds and I fluctuated between those same few pounds for a week and a half.  I was concerned as well, even though I knew there was no logical way I could be actually gaining weight.  I just kept taking in my fluids and protein and I finally started to lose again and so will you!  :)

Ditto exactly what Sheri wrote.  Same with me - at 3 weeks I gained 2 pounds and was incensed!  How can ANYONE gain 2 pounds while eating only 350 calories a day???

Still don't know the answer to that, and still think it's so unfair!  But yes... trust me, it happens.  And sadly, with me... it happens all the time.  However, overall... the scale IS moving downward.  Wish I could be more patient, because that's what it takes.

Keep on keepin' on.

Before a 'big' loss of say. 5 pounds, I would always gain a few and then suddenly drop a bunch. If you are working your tool you will do great. This is common . Measure yourself

I had my first stall at 3 weeks but didn't panic because everyone here said it was normal. Sure enough about 7 days later the scale took a big dip. Like Kat W. I weigh my self everyday but I only record and pay attention to the one on my surgiversary. At 8 weeks I have lost 45lbs and that's with a couple of stalls. Keep working your program and you will see the scales move again.

Carpe Diem!
