Do I need to take protein powder or anything food wise for the trip home??

I have to drive 4 hours home after I'm discharged. Should I bring protein powder or something to eat for the way home or just sip water??? I'm still not sure exactly what I'm supposed to be eating. Thanks

Make sure you have water to sip. Most likely they will have someone go over what you should be eating in your discharge papers.

Hi, I was advised not to drive for 7-10 days, but maybe you meant ride, not drive, 4 hours? A great habit to acquire is to keep pre-made protein drinks, protein bars, and bottled water on-hand just about all the time.  If you had a protein drink just before departing and then again on arrival, the trip could be your opportunity to sip water and/or snooze (sipping water was like a full-time job the first few weeks post-op.) Before you are discharged, please tell staff you are "still not sure exactly what you are suppose to be eating" so they can provide you with clear, printed guidelines to follow.  Safe travels.

you may still be on a clear liquid diet after discharge. I would take some broth cube so/granules and an insulated mug with a top for the ride home. You can get ho****er just about anywhere.

I had a six hour trip to where I had surgery.  I packed a cooler and supplies for the trip there and back.  Pack a pillow to put across your stomach while you ride......you will need it.  My doctor insisted we stop every hour and for me to get out and walk....even if it was just around the car.....you don't want any clots in your legs.

Blood clot in the leg... found one, lived through emergency surgery, hated Heparin shots in the stomach, and surprised I didn't think to mention stopping to walk, too.  STOP. TO. WALK.

Just be sure you've got your next dose of pain medication ready to go - vs. just getting a scrip that needs to be filled when you get home.

I would encourage you let your doctor and nurses know and they may have suggestions for the ride.

I had a much shorter ride home than you at 1 1/2 hours. As I was on clear liquids only, I had several bottles of water on hand. It might not hurt to ask about anti-nausea medication (I had a scopolamine patch) just in case you feel carsick on the drive home.
