Hi - I have a question about calories. How many calories has your NUT recommended?

Mine has said my goal should be to stick around 1400 per day, but I'm wondering what others have been told?

I've lost 105lbs so far and had surgery 7 months ago.

Are you at goal or in the maintenance phase now?  What is your BMI now?  Did they give a reason for your precise number?

My current BMI 35.7 which is obese. I haven't decided if this is goal yet, if this is where my body settles, I'm prepared to accept that. I am way better health than I was. I never expected to be tiny. They said for me to be nutritionally sound, I would need to consume this many calories or they would start to consider me under nourished.

I have been able to eat that many calories, but I'm usually under and not wanting more or feeling deprived. I'm in the process of getting used to my hunger coming back.

At 7 months post-op I was on my surgeon's lifetime maintenance plan which aims for 1,300-1,500 calories per day.  However, the plan emphasizes food choices and portions over counting calories.

If I ate 1400 calories a day and more than 30-50 carbs a day I would gain weight. I am 7 YEARS post op.

At 7 months out, my surgeon did not emphasize a caloric amount per se.  Instead, he emphasized eating 5-6 mini meals per day.  For me, that works out to be around 1000-1300 calories per day.  He is more concerned about always having protein first, then vegetable.

Bariatric plans differ, but here is mine from St. Vincent's Indianapolis, Indiana

0-6 months: 600-800 Calories, 40-60 gram carbs, 60-80 grams protein

6-12 months: 800-1200 calories, 60-80 grams carbs, 60-80 grams protein

12-18 months: 1100-1300 calories, 100-130 grams carbs, 80 grams protein

Maintenance: 1200-1400 calories, 130 grams carbs, 80 grams protein

This is how many calories I ate/eat:

  • 1-2 Months After Surgery: I ate 500 calories a day
  • 3-6 Months After Surgery: I ate 600-700 calories a day
  • 7-9 Months After Surgery: I ate 800-900 calories a day
  • 10-12 Months After Surgery: I ate 1000 calories a day
  • 13-15 Months After Surgery: I ate 1200 calories a day to goal weight (I reached my goal weight at 15 months out)
  • Maintenance 16-30 Months After Surgery: I ate 2000-2500 calories a day
  • Maintenance: 31 Months After Surgery to Today: 1800-2000 calories a day

All of the above calories eaten were without exercise. I would not concern yourself with what calories are burned through exercise since those figures (no matter what the source) are not truly accurate. Exercise should be for the physical and mental benefits only. If interested, please see my profile page where I detail my experience with RNY.
