I had surgery 4/3/15, was told my insurance would cover surgery and to expect to pay some out of pocket expenses.  I received my explanation of benefits from my insurance two weeks after surgery  and seen what my out of pocket would be.  It seemed odd that it was less than $1000. I called the hospital to confirm the balance owed and they confirmed.  Now I receive a bill for a whopping $13,000! Does this sound about right?  What was your pay oop? I have Blue Cross of CA, which typically covers 80% of services.

That doesn't sound right at all. Are you sure they even ran it through your insurance? Even super high-deductible plans rarely have deductibles higher than $5000. Give a call to the # on the bill.

I just received the bill today,  I'm calling my insurance tomorrow morning. I almost had a heart attack!

I looked at my (Eob) of this $13,000 bill and it states my responsibility is $0.00.

If your responsibility is 0.00. then it is not a bill.

It is merely a listing/charge that the insurance and/or hospital sends to you that shows what was performed and its cost.

It is supposed to help reduce medical fraud. Now, is the time when you look and say "Wow, I didnt have a cast placed on my wrist!"). If that were the case, you woudl call the insurance company and tell them about this bogus charge and notify the hospital as well.

The letter I received from my dr.'s clinic states bill on top. I have excellent insurance so I will definitely call them out on it.

Is there any difference in the services listed on the bills? I have heard of some people receiving a bill (not for that much) from the anesthesiologist because they ended up being out of network.

This bill is specifically for the surgeon.

Oh but I see now above that there is $0 due... That makes a big difference! There's no problem then, right? Or now the fact that one says you owe $1000 and the other $0?

The. bill from the dr. Says I owe him $13,000. My insurance statement says I owe the dr. $0.

No, it says your responsibility is $0.  Your surgeon is sending you a bill showing how much is being billed to insurance.  They are most likely expecting the co-pay and deductible to be used by the hospital.  If your bill says "Your portion" or "Your responsibility" and its $0 then you are fine.  Who is the $1000 bill from?
