No post-op swallow test?

I've been reading updates from others who are newly post-op and see everyone talking about their swallow tests. Both of my friends who had VSG recently with my same surgeon had to do swallow tests as well, but I didn't. Why would that be? They had me sipping water and protein shakes as soon as I was awake, and I didn't do any additional tests in the hospital. Just spent the night and was discharged the next morning.
I never had a swallow test either. They did a leak test while I was still under.

Ah, thanks Grim! I looked up my operative report (one of the benefits of working for the hospital where I had my surgery), and sure enough, that's exactly what they did! Apparently there was some "oozing at the staple line" so the oversewed it...hmm, I wonder if that'll mean anything long-term.
When I had my revision in February I had asked my surgeon the next day if he was doing a leak test or as some say a swallow test. He does two checks while his patients are still under just incase something needs to be fixed so there was no need for a third one.
It may be possible that is what your surgeon did so you didn't have to have one done.

I had both tests -- but I have to agree -- that stuff made me feel sick for hours afterwards.

FWIW, none of the surgeons in my city or the doctors that I work for in a nearby city do post-op leak tests. They all do the test as the last step of the surgery before closing you up.
It makes sense. Why risk having to open someone BACK UP a day later if there is a leak when you can find it and fix it during the original surgery?!? I personally wouldn't use a surgeon that did a post-op leak test.
