Started class at Y tonight - did not go well :(

I promised myself that I would take a class at the Y once the pain in my side went away. It went away about a week and a half ago and I signed up for a BASIC step class the next day and the first one was tonight. I was really excited about it for a couple of reasons - I live in a small town and don't really know anyone here.  So I was hoping to maybe get to know people in the class or something. And obviously because I need to get exercise. I live in Ohio and I hate the heat so starting in May I'm not a fan of being outside and it snows a big portion of the year too.

Anyways the point is that I signed up for what said was a basic step class. I'm pretty shy but I made myself go. As soon as the class started I knew there was NO way I could keep up. The only good thing was that there wasn't any mirror in the front or anything like I was imagining. I felt like such an ass. It was incredibly fast and after the class a few people commented that the class was way faster than normal but I left in tears. I hate putting myself out there and I did and I feel so stupid. I know I need to exercise but I just feel lost when it comes to this.

I have had the same issues before my WLS with being shy. You have taken a great stride forward with making yourself go to the class. Do not put yourself down by feeling that you are an ass.

See if you can find a way to get in contact with the leader and see if s/he can alter the pace or suggest how you can adjust.

Keep up the good work with becoming a new person.

Does it help to know you are not alone? I made it to one yoga class and instead of feeling like an ass, I was worried about my ass.  My DD said passing gas is considered no big deal in the yoga world. I told her, "it is a big deal if you've had WLS."   I'll pass---on any more yoga classes, that is.

A basic step class can be *very* difficult.  Especially if the teacher uses a lot of choreography.  Don't be down, just try something else or another teacher.  Some teachers do very basic moves over and over and some use lots of dancey moves.  A good one to try is kickboxing because you can go at your own pace and just punch the air if you can't keep up.  I'd also recommend Zumba (again try different teachers, it's amazing how different they all are.  Keep your head up :)  xoxo

I figured someone here would get it! I looked at all the classes they offer and I just don't think any of them would suit my non existent level :( Zumba scares me because my best friend teaches that and she's a size 0 lol. She tells me I can do it but I don't believe her because she would support me in anything I do!

All the other classes seem over my head too. I'm so bummed. I don't want to give up on a class at all. Plus you can only start classes at the beginning of the month so I'm screwed for this month. So frustrating!!

Hey, maybe if your best friend teaches it she would be willing to get you up to speed with some of the moves :) or maybe you could get a DVD or check out YouTube to learn some of the basics. The teachers may have different styles, but this could help boost your workout confidence!!

Sister I weight 352 at my first zumba class... I was FREAKED!  then I just danced to her plan when I could and moved my rump to my plan when I couldn't.  I had on my heart rate chest belt and watch so I didn't blow an o ring.  do YOU any way you can.  if you cant keep up with her on the step just step up and down.  Don't let you stop you. xooxooxooxoox

Do the best you can, and don't worry about other people. Before you know it, you'll be kicking ass.

Hang in there.

I'm so sorry you had a bad experience. But everyone has to start somewhere! I had to take dance in college and was constantly getting hit in the face with jazz hands because I can't dance and was in the wrong spot! So today, I jogged. For almost 30 seconds :)

Just think how much better you'll be if you go a couple more times to the class. Maybe the instructor isn't for you, or you actually hate step aerobics...but you just don't know it yet. And if you can't keep up, that's ok too. Do what you can and it'll be more than you were doing before.
