I have a sedentary desk job. How many days should I expect to miss from work after surgery? I need to miss as few days as possible ? Thanks!

I am a college teacher.  I was back teaching in 10 days from surgery.  I didn't feel great though -- and I was really tired after work for a while.  I would have like to have taken another week off.  I do have to walk quite a distance around the campus and stand while I teach, however.  I think I would have been much better with a desk job at that time.

3 to 4 weeks many people say.  A few general things...Not set in stone.  It takes energy to; get up, get dressed, bathroom, breakfast, walk to the car, drive, walk to work, work, breaks, work, drive home.  All this while having your stomach the size of a large walnut.  You may try and grab for energy and it just may not be there.  You are burning fat cells (through your liver) which uses quite a bit of energy.  What I suggest for people coming back to work is this.  If you work a Monday-Friday shift, come back on a Thursday and Friday for 1/2 days.  See how you adjust to the 4 hours.  It gives you prep time for having your water, vitamins, and food ready.  You can work out a schedule.  Many people want to take naps after a long day...No energy.  The energy level comes back.  But if you are active you will be using a lot of energy for movement.  I was 51 (male) when I had my surgery.  One week I lost 10 pounds!!  Can you guess what my energy level was like??  Just my 2 cents.  Brian

I know some people go back in one week. I would rather plan on two weeks and go back in one if I was feeling good. I felt great after one week, but I got majorly tired in the afternoons for a couple more weeks....

I'm 11 days post op and ready to go back! I was given two weeks,  I'll be back at my desk job on Monday. I'm feeling great and I have alot of energy,  but do get tired mid afternoon. I secured short term disability through my employer years ago,  and I'm using that towards my second week off.

I went back after 3 weeks and was tired after work for a couple weeks and went home and crashed.  But it was doable.

I also have a sedentary job. Had surgery on a Thursday. Went back to work on the second Monday after surgery. Total days off including weekends was 10 days. Went to work, then went straight home to rest, I made sure I had no extra curricular activities after work and I was fine.

I went back to work the day before my 2 weeks was up. I too have a desk job for the most part. I work out of my house so that made it easier. I also travel within the state...but my first week back I did not travel worked from desk all that week. I was tired at end of day. I would allow myself extra time in getting ready to go out to work. You get tired easier. Takes me longer to shower, dress, makeup etc to get ready to go out. Pack you a cooler bag with your liquids and things you need to have during your day.

I am just 10days from surgery now - had mine 4/6. It would be a struggle for me to get through a day of work, even with a desk job, if I were starting today.  I'm tired by mid-afternoon and my mid section is still sore when I sit for a while.  But I had a few minor complications and I'm kinda old at 53 ;-) so that factors into the healing time, too.

I think you'll find a lot of variation but when I polled everyone pre-surgery, 2 weeks seems to be the average time for an office/desk job.
