Fruit ? for the vets

I eat strawberries (1/2 cup, sliced) at least 2x's a week. I eat bananas also. I have tried pineapple, but it doesnt seem to sit as well. My mindset is, that its better to have a small amount of natural sugar to ease my "sweet tooth"  than to eat those damned cookies they keep putting in the break room! Just try a little and see how you do. Good Luck!

I would agree that all fruits are nutritious, but our body handles different fruits differently.  Some fruits are high in sugar, although natural, and will have a greater impact on our blood sugar, while other fruits are lower in sugar and higher in fiber.  I typically base my fruits on the glycemic index which scores foods on various factors.  Foods with a low GI or GL have a smaller impact on our blood sugar while foods higher have a larger impact.  As a rule dark berries tend to be fairly low so I eat those freely, while things like Pineapple have higher score so I eat that sparingly.  Bananas I only eat for recovery.

All common fresh fruits, with the single exception of bananas, have a "low" glycemic load less than 10.  Even bananas at 12 are barely medium.

For the love of all that is good and healthy in this world don't steer away from fruits because of "sugar."

Seeing how in some individuals after surgery sugar can have a negative affect, and me being one of them knowing your limit for sugar per serving and managing your intake can be important.  if I eat 14 grams of ANY sugar in under 90 minutes I will be unconscious on the floor from dumping or have a GI issue.

I know some individuals that most fruits will make ill for even a small serving.  As someone who enjoys Endurance activity I look at my food as fuel and don't avoid what will benefit me at that point.  As someone who has and does race for 7+ hours in a triathlon I maintain a very low carb and minimal refined sugar diet.

What I answered is what I have done and what works for me, which may not be the same that works for everyone else.  I don't steer people away from anything but rather tell it like it has been for me in an honest way.  If that is not what is wanted or asked for then I can stop posting.

Of course.  The small subset of patients who are wildly sensitive to sugar clearly need to do what's right for them, just like someone who is lactose or gluten intolerant.  If someone posted that they ate half a cup of strawberries and had a seizure and hour later from low blood sugar I would advise them to avoid it.

However, most people can tolerate fruit just fine and should not avoid it simply because it contains sugar or "carbs are bad."

Paul - I am with you on that... except berries.. I can eat berries as long as they are fresh... I don't think my body can process all the sugar in berries... but any other fruits... a few bites can send me into dumping and the RH

Paul - Don't consider not posting.     You provided relevant information, and it's just as valuable as everyone else's.  We all live different lives - what's good for some is not good for all - but that doesn't mean it's bad.
