Depression after surgery? Also cymbalta absorption?
Thank you very much for your post. I will speak to my family dr. as well as the surgeon on this matter. I was advised this by the internal specialist. Scary that a dr can give this advise. The general public tends to believe everything their doctor tells them as they are suppose to be the experts. Thank you.
Thanks for the feedback everyone. I don't think it's my Cymbalta that's the issue anymore. I really think it's the combination of the pain I'm still in - which is driving me crazy because I know it's unusual to be in this much pain 2 weeks out from surgery- and not being able to move much because of that pain. That plus the surgery and anesthesia I think is kicking my ass and making me a crazy hot mess of emotions. I'm trying to think logically which I'm usually pretty good at but I'm not doing the greatest job right now.

MELINDA---career, nosey nurse here (sorry-occupational hazard!)...It concerns me, that, at 2 weeks out, you are still having so much pain, you can't be mobile...ANYONE would be "depressed"...I was split, from stem to stern, and was walking...slowly...at least a mile, at 2 weeks out...My first walk OUTSIDE lifted my spirits SO much!!
So...what's with the pain? Scar tissue from, previous surgeries? You've been back for a check up-right? Taking your pain meds? Sleeping? How much exercise ARE you doing (not not not judging-just asking- WANTING to help, here)...

I am having a lot of pain on my left side about 3 inches below my incision. It started being just when I got up and sat down. It hurt but wasn't horrible, I have walked outside but not far - definitely not a mile. And not much thanks to the weather here.
I did go for my 1 week check up last week and told him how much pain it was there, he said that not everyone experiences that but it is normal for some and it can last up to 3 weeks. I also had scar tissue from previous surgeries to deal with. I'm taking pain meds at night because I'm working during the day and I am sleeping thankfully otherwise I would truly be crazy. I'm not doing any exercise at all during the week because by the time I'm done working I'm in so much pain I can't go walking. On the weekends I am making myself take a few short walks.
I'm having zero issues with food (yay!) and this feels almost muscular? But it hurts SO BADLY that I can't do much. I plan on calling the Dr at 3 weeks and telling him it's no better but I honestly have no idea what they'll be able to do about it.

Not sure what type of job you have. But when i am in pain (back pain) i sometimes have no choice but to take pain pills during the day. I would not take it and drive, but i may take 1/2 pill (narco) with an extra tylenol when i get to work and I know i will not be driving For the next few hours. Taking that with some food makes the pill slower to absorb. Even taking 1/4 off narco ( 1/4 of 5mg) made a difference in my pain level, but it was not too, much to make me unable to do my work.
The problem with pain is that it get worse if not managed during the day. I hope you find out what is going on.

I've been on Cymbalta for nearly 11 years and it's been almost 3 years since my RNY. I've never had any absorption issues with my Cymbalta. I did experience some hormone dumping and emotional issues regarding food that I had to work through after RNY. I wouldn't advise opening your Cymbalta and putting it on Applesauce. First of all there is no nutritional value in applesauce for a recent post op (or really anyone for that matter). Second of all you should be able to swallow pills whole after surgery.
Hi. I just wanted to add that yes while you are by no means supposed to open Cymbalta/Duloxetine and just swallow it or mix it with all foods the ONLY way that it is safe to do that is with applesauce. For some reason it coats and preserves the coating on the medicine. I have gotten this information from my pharmacist, doctor and triple checked on a few different drug checker websites. But you always need to do this under a doctors supervision.
