Walking
My Dr. didn't give me a goal, other than to try and increase my steps each day. I was pretty sedentary pre-op so the number was VERY low to start. I bought a fitbit and just made a deal with myself that even if I was only at 2000 steps on day one, I'd be at 2050 the following day, etc. etc. Now I average 9000 steps a day and I'm still working on getting to 10,000, which is my ultimate goal. I"m 14 months post op, so as you can see, the increase was gradual over a long period of time. Good luck and keep walking!

I started out just going around the block, and was almost prostrated by the experience. Fast forward to gradually extending the time and intensity of the walks until I was doing 2 to 3 miles daily, and then participating in 10K walks (not running due to bad knees) and enjoying my communing with Nature on a daily basis.
Do your best for yourself, and then do a little bit more every week. You'll be pleased at your progress in a year. There's no reason to kill yourself.
I started out by taking the dog out for a quick 5 minute walk, then 10 minute walk, then 15 minutes, then 20 minutes. Within a few weeks I was leaving the dog at home since he was slowing me down :) Now I run / walk 4 miles several times per week in addition to joining the Y. Oh and I still take the dog out, but not as my "workout." Good luck! Keep on moving...xoxo
