needing some wisdom from other light weights
I was 87 lbs overweight with sleep issues and GERD that was so horrible, I had to take meds morning and night to control it. My 25 year old daughter who was 135lbs overweight and pre-diabetic decided to have RNY. I initially listened to what she had to go through and flat out told her she was crazy. Part of it was because I was worried with what she had to go through and part of it was thinking she could do it on her own if she really tried. She asked me to go to the next appointment with her to better understand the procedure. I wound up talking to her surgeon about my concerns and through the discussion - decided to have a consultation for me. Long story short - we both had RNY in Dec 2014. I am down 54lbs as of this morning, my GERD is almost completely gone and I fall asleep and stay asleep all night now. I am 37lbs from goal and feel great. Listen to your heart and your doctor and do what is best for you.
I too was considered a lightweight. I started the program at 246, 5'4". A year and 3.months later for my surgery( I had to see my NUT for 12 months), I was at 207. I go for my year appointment tommorrow so I can get my exact weight. But this morning it was 121.5 on my scale. I only told a few people before hand, I think my husband told more than me. But afterwards when people found out, my SIL said I didn't need it, to loose it on my own...well if that was the case, believe me I would of. She is overweight herself, no doubt considered obese and is diabetic. I have had a few other people say things and I tell them, the insurance company would not of approved it, if they didn't think I needed it, I did have High BP and GERD with Barrett's Esophogus. This was the best desicion I have made! Loving life now.
Good point. I had some of the same as you. No GERD now! No HBP now, but I still have to watch for extra sodium... made my BP rise... holiday eating. A1C 5.6 last test and daily blood sugars average 88 daily. Also day of surgery 252, today I range between 118 and 124. Doctor says 124 was goal during last return visit... maintaining. 2yrs+ post-ops. Yes, when you are not the larger of the group, people will treat you different... those that see your change may have insecurities rise from your success too. Be prepared for as much as you can.
Devils advocate... I had type 2 and more; 5' 2 1/4" but lots of weight; 175 pounds worth. WLS was last venue for all the comorbidities I had. If you tired an nothing worked... ok but also know that you still will have to watch your A1C post WLS for life too. Some call it remission and it could return based on life style, stress eating, and more or even less. Not sure how much of your extra weight is body fat Vs muscle mass either; high BMIs look at potentially loosing 75% of the extra body fat for more lean physique and better health. Bottom line, if you feel this is best for you then do it. This reply is not to tell you not to do WLS. You are not crazy. Just some extra information for you.
