You don't drown by falling in the water. You drown by staying there.

I have never understood why some surgeons tell their patients no straws ever after surgery. There is zero evidence that straws introduce excess air, and I cannot imagine how it could cause any damage to the pouch even when very early out (and neither could the one surgeon I asked).

On the other hand, straws enable many people to get in the necessary fluids post-op.  I would never have gotten close during my first few months without straws, and certainly wouldn't have been able to choke down some of the more disgusting protein shakes.

I always used one without issue... surgeon was fine with it... basically said if it hurts stop, if it doesn't fine. I think it helped early on control how much I sipped... versus gulping too much which is ouch.

I am 7 weeks out and use straws for my blended shakes, water and flavored iced teas (no sugar) every day with no issues.  Just about everything I drink is with a straw.  I love drinking cold beverages with a straw.  It is much easier for me to drink and finish them.

I am so glad to hear some have no issue with straws. I do miss them. I am going to try one today to see if I have any problem. I have a tendency when I drink to sometimes forget to sip and gulp... that can be unpleasant.
