Underweight or more than 100% EWL? I want to know!
Hi Gang,
This is an academic question that I haven't seen on OH and now inquiring minds (i.e. mine!) want to know.
My question is- how many of you ended up underweight or having a greater than 100% excess weight loss (i.e. EWL) WITHOUT a comorbidity such as stricture/pain/surgical complication. Basically I am looking at the population of RNY'ers that had an essentially flawless surgery and recovery.
The reason I ask is my surgeon showed the weight loss as a bell curve. Some will have less weight loss, some will have maximal weight loss but most will be in the middle.
I am curious because I am now a US size 6. I am ordering small sized clothes now, however I started this journey as a XXL-XXXL.
I am currently in my healthy weight now (per some random insurance charts).
But I potentially have 6 months of honeymoon left. Part of me is like...I dont remember being 130 ...ever. I KNOW that I was 130 at some point (I had to go through that weight to get to 270 lbs)...but I am kind of wondering...what is it like at 130?
If you ended up underweight or with greater than 100% EWL did you have to do anything crazy to get to that weight and/or maintain it? Or did it just happen naturally following your surgeons plan?
Thanks in advance!

Three pounds below Goal!!! Yay !
hotlinked because it's so much easier!
I had 100lbs to lose because I had a BMI of 40 - to get a "normal" BMI - I lost 120lbs so an arbitrary 120 per cent of EWL, giving me a BMI of 21.
I did nothing special to lose it and weight loss just stopped on its own. I was in my 40s and looked gaunt - although I loved wearing size 8 jeans (I am 6ft tall) but it only lasted until year 4 and I looked tons better when I regained to a 24 BMI and a size 10/12.
I suspect there are a myriad of factors that contribute to our level of weight loss but we should all consider our long term future (although I am sure if you are a year out, you are not considering the next 10 years!)

Thanks for posting this. My surgeon considers 65% of excess weight success. I want 100%... Maybe more for some cushion.

Thanks for linking the chart Kim--so much easier for non tech people like me. I lost to underweight at one year out and now at 28 months I am at a 19.3 bmi at 121 pounds and 5'6.5''. My original goal was 160 but quickly lowered to 145. I started at 268 and had been overweight my whole life. All I did was follow my doctors plan 99.6 percent of the time. I eat three meals and 2 small healthy snacks a day and exercise 90 minutes nearly every day. Like Kim I don't do protein drinks or bars but eat real healthy food in good balance:plenty of protein, some non starchy veggies, fruit, and some whole grains like steel cut oats. I stay away from alcohol and white starches like potatoes, bread, rice, pasta and anything sweet. I would much rather eat natural sugars in fruit like apples than artificially sweetened things like sugar free pudding. I haven't changed anything in maintenance(last 20 months) but my weight went up a few pounds on its own and stopped. Lowest was 116 and now I stay right around 121. Hope I can win this struggle long term and be where Kim is down the road. I'm so glad for the vets like her that take time to share their journeys with us!
You are so welcome, Karen - I know hyperlinking makes it easier for people on tablets and phones - call it a public service for those who don't know how or don't want to do it!!!
I have enjoyed getting to know you on this board over the years and it makes me happy to get to know people who are receptive to advice and the musings of someone *****ally has BTDT.
You are truly a great success and an inspiration both for your results and the fact that you still come here to contribute to the board when so many spam the board for a year and the POOF! they're gone!
