Carafate alternatives?

Hello all,

Tuesday morning I ended up in the ER due to a bleeding ulcer.  This is not the first ulcer I have had since my surgery almost 6 months ago but it is definitely the most painful.  I am now on Carafate again, I do not tolerate it well.  I constantly have an upset stomach with problems eating or drinking.  I am also dizzy and have a headache.  I can't get the required amount of fluids or protein in while on the med.  I have even resorted to taking it throughout the night so I don't have to take it during the day to try and alleviate the side effects.  It hasn't been too beneficial.  Last time I complained to my surgeon about the side effects he told me to suck it up, needless to say I didn't finish up the meds (take for the entire 30 days).  I just want to know if I have any alternatives to Carafate.  30 days of this will be hell.

Has anyone been on anything other than Carafate for an ulcer?  Was it successful?

Thank you in advance!

Carafate was one of the contributing factors to saving my life. I would have taken an ulcer over what I went and am still going through in a heartbeat.

My advise is the same. Just take it. The object is to heal the ulcer.  The med isn't making you sick it's the ulcer.

I can not take the pill form but have alot of success with the liquid. it is more expensive but I think it works ten times better. which are you taking?

Yes. The liquid. Just chug a few spoonfuls before you eat and go to bed.

I have bottles everywhere.  Work, car, purse...

I have the liquid but my instructions say I have to take it 2 hours after eating on an empty stomach and then I have to wait an hour before I can eat.  Are these unusual instructions?

Sounds kinda silly..  I take 2 spoonfuls by mouth 15 min before I eat. So several times a day. And before I go to bed. Letting your stomach dry out just lets that bile burn. If I get sick in the middle of the night I get up and take a swig.  It's on my nightstand

When I worked as a nurse, we called 'Carafate"  Ulcer glue.  'be thankful you have it.  The alternatives are not pretty.
