Champagne Toast

New Year's Eve is quickly approaching . I'll be 21 days out of surgery. Do you think it will be alright to have my first glass of champagne?  I heard that after the surgery alcohol goes straight to your head.  Is it worth it to?  There is no protein in champagne but it is a clear liquid.

My vote is "no" to both questions.

Hi Cookie

At three weeks out I would say absolutely not.  You are still healing inside - and your liver is working overtime to process all the fat lost.  Please don't stress it more.

The way I looked at it - its just a glass of alcohol!  You can take this either way - but to me why screw around at this point?  Next New Years you may be at goal or well on your way - and a treat or two during the holidays will be worth celebrating.

The big thing with all wls is the head game.  So it ends up not just being about having the champagne - ( insert any non essential item here) but about going off plan and what it does to you mentally.  This may sound ridiculous to you - but it can begin a mental slide into "moderation" and the thinking that a little bit of everything is OK.    Well its not IMO - there is nothing moderate about surgery and you have only one chance to get this right - no do-overs.

You may think my opinion is reactionary - yeah its just a glass of champagne.  My experience is the longer you can go on plan the better you will be.

Good luck

Well said and thank you. You hit the nail right on the head. I'm going to pass on the empty calories.  The idea of making me liver work harder scares me.  You're so right about the head game. This is my last chance to score big!  Thanks again for your inspiration!

While I have found the advice of many on the board to be priceless, I really believe that conversations such as this are best had with your Doc. Seriously, call or email your doctors and have that conversation, they know you better then any of us and can tell you if this is something that they feel comfortable with (chances are that they don't). The best advise that I ever got on this board was "follow your doctors advise), so I am giving you the gift of that sage advise that I was given.

Good luck!

NO.

Well, actually you can toast with champagne.  You just can't drink it.
