Talk to your surgeon about complications. Ask him how many surgeries he's done, and how many of his patients died from surgery, and how many had serious complications. I am pretty sure you will feel much, much better after that.
Please note: I AM NOT A DOCTOR. If you want medical advice, talk to your doctor. Whatever I post, there is probably some surgeon or other health care provider somewhere that disagrees with me. If you want to know what your surgeon thinks, then ask him or her. Check out my blog.
People talk about problems a lot more often than those with no complications.

I am 4 months out and have had 0 complications. Recovery went smoothly and I've had no trouble eating or getting in my nutrition. I haven't even lost hair. I've had some emotional challenges...especially early on but physically all has gone perfectly. I stepped on the scale today and am 200 pounds. 1 pound from onederland! Down 112 from consultation weight...63 pounds since surgery. I have been blessed in this process. Horror stories and complications are not the norm.
Grim is right - people are more likely to talk when something goes wrong. I don't know if you are suffering any ill effects from being overweight, but for me personally I was suffering from many (diabetes, painful knees and back, short of breath, and much more) and I had my surgery on October 7th and am already off all medication, working out at the gym and feeling good. I regret not having done it sooner.
I think 98 out of 100 people would agree completely.

I felt like that too before I had my surgery. I have friends that have done it and had no issues and then I started researching and almost scared myself out of surgery. I am only 2 months out but I am glad that I did it! I haven't had any issues eating things up until this point ;)

I also haven't had any complications from surgery (knocking on wood) ...
But, I did have a lot of complications from being obese. I had become an insulin-dependant diabetic. I had recently gotten high blood pressure. Oh, and I had sleep apnea and snored so loud that you could hear me outside the house. Oh, and my feet hurt at night -- I was getting neuropathy. Oh, and I had a fatty liver and my pulse was 119 resting.
You know what else? I couldn't open the tray table when I rode in a plane let alone fasten a seat belt without an extension. I didn't fit into a lot of booths in restaurants either. I had never been able to ride a roller coaster with my little son. I could barely lift myself up off the floor if I sat down or fell. I was constantly offering to take photos of special events -- because seeing myself in a picture was often a terrible event. These were some pretty nasty "complications" of being obese.
So, I guess it just comes down to this: which complications have more risk to your life for you? For me, there is no question.
