5K Tiurkey Trot times-Post here!
You might be able to work up to a longer distance, if you're willing to do some physiotherapy. I see a chiro, acupuncturist, massage therapist and physio to keep me going lol. I have a huge year coming up. I'm really hoping to qualify for Boston in May! Training starts in January! Never thought for a minute I could even attempt this!
Surgery March 23/2011. Completed three full marathons and two half marathons, two half Ironman distances. Completed my first Full Ironman distance (4 km swim, 180 km bike, 42.2 km (full marathon) run) in Muskoka August 30/2015. Next Ironman Lake Placid July 23/2017!
When I did my first sub-30, I cried!! LOL

SkinnyScientist congratulations on running in the Turkey Trot. I am still MO, but I participated in my first 5k Turkey Trot...I trotted a little, but walked it mostly..lol However, I was just so proud of myself for doing it. I would have never even considered it before I had surgery. I have long way to go, but I'm getting there...
Again congrats on all your success!
So funny, I thought about you and your post after your return to running recently while I was on the treadmill today and then I come to my computer and find this post! I've only been exercising regularly for a couple of weeks. I have a knee problem that scared me away from hard exercise while I was still really heavy. I'm feeling good now and picked my 5k to participate in in late March. I did the whole 5k on the treadmill today for the first time. My time is 62:35. Yikes, I've got a ways to go but that's OK. I'm in it for the long haul now!
I think you take that 62:35 and OWN it. You did MORE than any couch potato that just sat there and let their arteries fill up with plaque. The couch kills too...just slowly.
I like to observe people. And have you noticed the retireees that retire and just sit are so much more "old" in their bodies AND minds than those that have hobbies, volunteer, and get up and do things? Seriously...take a look. These retirees dont do things fast, yet they are still way stronger and more mobile than those that just sat (and watched tv).
So as you walk/jog more you will become stronger. Consider a trainer or PT. People with normal phsyiology have to ramp up slowly. I do too (my IT bands love to get inflammed which makes my knees buckle/hurt). so you may have to ramp up even more slowly. But..you are still DOING it...
Also..in a 5K distance you burn the same amount of calories whether you walked or ran it. You just get those calories burned faster (i.e. in a shorter amount of time) if you run it. But 394 calories is still 394 calories..no matter if it was walking or running
