My "first" 5K out of retirement is Sunday
Hi Guys!
Thanks to all of those that sent good warm wishes and positive mental energy my way. 38 year old me was worried that she would not be able to beat the time of 26 year old "me."
I am proud to report that 38 year old skinny scientist achieved a personal best of 36:47 for her first 5K run out of retirement! I bought my fiancee (who did hill work for me for 2 months) a bouquet of star gazer lillies, a thank you card, and made him a good lunch (hot chicken caesar salad, pesto tomatoe mozella salad, sf vanilla pudding and wine) as a thank you for all the time he put in wiht me.
I am 12 minutes faster despite being 12 years older!!!

CONGRATULATIONS! Wow -- don't you feel so accomplished??!! As I said, it put me off running for about 5 days because I am very far from being a gazelle -- it was pure drive and determination.
As for a turkey trot, who knows? Seems now that I "run" I have others at work who all want to get together to do these events. So, I shall see where the next path leads. Meanwhile, keep up the great work and thanks for sharing!

Melissa,
Of course you run! If at some point in your stride, BOTH feet are off the ground, you are running. To achieve the time you did, you were running.
And you are a "runner" from the slower peoples/couch potatoes perspective (e.g. my eyes).
In the past, I noticed others getting excited about others success in running and want to join in. HOwever, once the serious training starts (i.e. the sole hits the road) they often lose interest. Keep to your workouts and run the races you want to run. If they show up-GREAT! If they don't-STICK TO YOUR PLAN.
I hope that someday we will meet at a charity run.

Thanks Mary. Initially I was proud, but then a guy at work talked about his first 5K was 21 minutes...and then I felt like crap.
But then I realized, this is good for ME. I am only competing against myself and Morbid Obesity and I am FINALLY winning on both fronts.
Your guys' post really put things in perspective.
So, I am happy and proud and going to start training for that mountain in NOvember.
Thank you for putting things in perspective for me!
