It happened to me-I gained 2 lbs in ONE NIGHT-post rny
There is a trend for eating "clean" simply because things like pizza and beer make you retain water, and in large amounts make you gain weight. It isn't because small amounts magically cause you to gain weight or to completely stop weight loss.
I don't understand why it is so hard to just acknowledge that rather than seeking some special, unique explanation that doesn't fit with what we already know. The 2 slices of pizza and three beers one night did not cause you to gain 2 pounds of fat overnight, nor did it do something to mess up your weight loss long term. It simply caused your body to retain fluids that took several days to get rid of.
Perhaps it takes your body longer than the "average" person to eliminate excess fluid, or perhaps you ate/drank other things in the subsequent days that caused it to happen more slowly, but my point remains that it is a disservice to others here who might not know any better (and, rather than taking away from your experience that it probably isn't a good idea to eat pizza and drink beer, they buy into the nonsense that it caused you to gain two pounds of fat overnight.
Also, as far as the skin issue you experience after prolonged carb consumption still doesn't make your body completely different from everyone else's (the way gaining 2 pounds of fat would)... it just means that your body responds in a negative way to the carbs. If they have a name for it, then you are not the only one it happens to.
I understand that people get frustrated when they stop losing or when the scale goes up a few pounds temporarily, but the et is no reason to look for explanations that go against all scientific evidence. Just accept that the pizza and beer (which I have no problem with anyone enjoying occasionally,BTW) caused you to retain water for a few days.

You don't drown by falling in the water. You drown by staying there.

You lost 2lb in 4 days. I rather doubt you lost that fast before surgery.

As WLS patients we are given certain dietary guidelines. There are huge variations, but in general they all have a couple of things in common. Low calories is one, and protein first is the other. I truly feel that, if it wasn't for the protein guideline, a significant percentage of people would eat almost no protein. None.
What ends up happening is we villify carbs. Carbs are evil now the way fat was (and still is for some). Carbs can be a real trigger for many, making them crave more and more. But not everyone. And carbs are given some magical weight gaining properties that they simply don't possess. Three beers are 450 calories. That's a lot in a 1200 calorie diet. But once in a blue moon isn't a problem. Drinking three beers every day would. The same goes for pizza.
We get so focused on our weight fluctuations from day to day (or hour to hour), that we make analytical leaps not supported by medical science. Did my two week stall end because I ate under 20 grams of carbs while drinking goat's milk shakes and doing one-footed jumping jacks, or was that two week stall going to end today anyway? Did my football team win because my buddy and I were sitting in the same chairs and eating the same snacks as the last time they won? Or was it something else?
If you believe pizza and beer are the devil, go ahead. It's not like you need those things. But I guarantee that there will be many times in the future you will gain two pounds overnite. Many, many times. And if you didn't have pizza and beer the night before, there will need to be another culprit. It's best you find some way to make your peace with that now. Every eating choice is not critical. Trends can be.
Eating clean? I'm the poster child for not eating clean. I think a very small number of people could eat the way I do. But it works for me, and most important, it is what can work for me long term. Still, I think my dietician sometimes wakes up at night in a cold sweat just thinking about it.
I need to find a way to make money from the Captain Grim's Eating Dirty Diet.

Never mind the fact that NOBODY can come up with a unified definition of "eating clean," even among the hardcore non-WLS dieters.

Exactly. And I dislike just talking about carbs. Twinkies and carrots are carbs. It's a huge range.

Grim you must be possessed by the carb police to have written such a master piece! My Nut loves to tell me that one can be malnourished eating 1000 calories of chocolate and the same is true if one eats 1000 calories of fruit and veg. Makes me laugh and think you of every time she spouts her words of wisdom.

My weight varies by up to 5 lbs every day and depending on what time of day it is and how much fluid or sodium I ingested. I weigh a couple of times a day and sometimes I weigh 5 lbs more by the end of the day and then that 5 lbs is gone 2 days later.
I have the occasional drink, however, I will say this and I am only referring to ME--if I drank 3 beers post RNY I would be on the floor passed out.

SO glad I'm not the only one! My scale has been bouncing around within 2 or 3lb and it's driving me batty.
