Binge Drinking

I was never much of a drinker before my surgery but when I did have a glass of wine after surgery I found myself unable to stop. The first time I blacked out I couldn't figure out what was wrong! I go weeks without drinking anything but if I do have a drink it's as if  I don't realize when I over do!!

I have friends who say go to AA but it doesn't seem to apply! I want to feel normal and enjoy a glass of wine but if I start on that second glass I'm no longer normal!!

i don't feel this is just a transference of a food addiction but I'm sure that's the advice I will get! Go to AA, ect. I don't crave alcohol, no drink constantly. Guess I just wanted to vent my issue! I also have reactive hypoglycemia!

With that type of a reaction, to be honest I wouldn't touch alcohol again. Seems like the risks are way too high for what you get from it. If you are blacking out that is serious. The last thing you want is to wake up in a hospital. Binge drinking isn't healthy for anyone.

It sounds like you just need to set a limit ahead of time on how much you will drink (and over what period of time) and then stick to that.

A single drink is easy to count... and you yourself said that "if I start on that second glass I'm no longer normal".  If you know you are going to only have one drink, and you know approximately how long you will be at the event, you know how long you need to nurse that one drink (or know that after the one glass of wine is gone, you will need to switch to tea, water, etc.)

If you find yourself unable to control yourself enough to stick to a one glass limit, then I think some type of counseling (but not necessarily an AA type of program) is a good idea.

You don't drown by falling in the water. You drown by staying there.

Looks like you already have in your mind what the problem is and you just want to vent so I'll not tell you that you ARE an alcoholic.  Doesn't matter if it is caused by your surgery or not.  There is an saying among us recovering alcoholics.... one drink is to many and a 1,000 is not enough.

Good luck in your journey.
