I went to the informational meeting, orientation is 8/11/14. I am 5'4" female, age 57 with weight of 238. I am interested in the RNY. Can anyone tell me the advantages of this one as compared to the gastric sleeve? Also, what is this calorie metalabsorbic in the intestines? Any suggestions or advice is very appreciated.

Hi, I'm 55 and had the RNY in January. I don't know the caloric malabsorption rate but I believe the RNY has been the right choice for me. You don't have near the amount to lose that I did so the sleeve might work well for you. My doctor said the RNY was the only option for me due to a diagnosis of Barrett's Esophagus.  I had my sixth month check up on Wednesday and I asked when the malabsorption would end, my surgeon said that he only took out about 12" of intestine so malabsorption for me was very slight. I was okay with that because I feel like my rate of loss has been good.

hope this helps and good luck.

This is all new to me. I am considering the RNY surgery. Is this right.... they take out part of your intestine for the malabsorption to work? Also, with the RNY, do you lose the gherlin hormone that causes you to be hungry? Educate me please! Thanks!!

My doctor said yes, that the parts of the stomach that cause hunger are bypassed. He even drew me a picture to show me the areas of the stomach that cause hunger. I certainly don't feel hungry.

You have done so great! What an awesome story! You have encouraged me and hope I have similar results. Getting the weight off ,,,, I see as no problem with this surgery. It is "keeping" it off that scares me. I even tried the optifast weight loss program. Lost quite a bit of weight but fell into the old eating habits and gained all 60 lbs back plus more. I spent so much money doing that program sadly to say. I count this as my last chance to get it off and learn more this time around on how to eat healthy. Thank you again for your awesome story!!!

I had RNY gastric bypss almost 4 years ago. I have been working on a web site offering information and inspiration to others. I am very pleased with my surgery and the results. For information check out my web site.

You will find that many of us post-ops get plenty hungry!!

Also the malabsorption of calories is NOT permanent, you MUST use the first 12-18 months and work super hard to get as much off as possible. You can lose for long after that - but you never know when your helpful malabsorption will end.

I wish I didn't get hungry :(
