Back on Track 5 Day Pouch Test Question

I had my RNY in August of 2009 and did well until about 9 months ago.  I have regained some and was wondering about the 5 day pouch test.  I have seen posts referring to it in the past, but didn't ever read them.  Today I can't seem to find any to read about it.  I never knew exactly what it was.  Can someone explain it to me and is it something that can help me this far out from my surgery?

Thanks,

Melora

It is a five day fad diet for WLS patients.  I don't see how it helps anyone.  Did fad diets ever help you pre-op?  They don't work any better post-op.

It touts "pouch shrinkage" - no. There is no such thing. BUT...... when I find that too many carbs have crept back into my diet, I have done this to kick carbs back to the curb. And it works for that purpose, for me. It could be conceived as a fad diet if you expect it to shrink your pouch back to early post-op days. I do not. I use it as more of a carb-detox.

What will you do at the end of the five days? Just start doing that now, and you'll have a head start.

Melora...obviously all these other people have NOT tried the 5 Day pouch test.   You can go to 5daypouchtest.com and find the plan on it.   It DOES work.   With that being said it is NOT a fad diet but a eating plan to get you back on track with your eating and jump start your weight loss.   With that being said...doing the test alone IMHO won't work that well.   You will need to include a exercise program but let me tell you this....regains will NOT come off as quickly or easy as your weight loss after your WLS.   You will have to work for that loss by exercising and watching every bite that goes into your mouth.    Good luck to you.

So it DOES work? You can SHRINK your pouch in five days? Did they scope you before and after the five days to verify the size change or did you do the cottage cheese measurement? Why do they call it a "test"? What are you testing, exactly?

How does it get you back on track?  I guess that depends on the track you want to be on.  The five day pouch test plan is not at all like my post op meal plan, so it's not the track my surgeon and dietician wanted me to be on.  It's a short-term, very restrictive diet, which is what a fad diet is.

An "eating plan" that is only 5 days long is a fad diet.  Otherwise it would be something you could stick to for life.

I've never done the test either but I can see the value, as it was said, in getting you off the carbs.  It will take longer then 5 days to detox from them but it's a start.

I also wouldn't be doing it for 5 days but rather progress it much like your early post op diet, staying away from the bad carbs.

As far as shrinking the pouch, I knew that pre surgery whenever I dieted it felt like my stomach had shrunk as I became accustomed to smaller portions.  I don't think my stomach actually shrunk and I don't think your pouch will shrink, but you will get used to eating small amounts again.

So I would suggest skipping the 5 days of doing protein shakes and such, and just exercise and watch every bite that goes into your mouth.
