Can't stand protein powder

I just had my surgery on June 2,2014.  Came home on Wednesday.  I have found that my tastebuds have really changed.  I can't stand the taste of the protein powders, just the smell makes me gag.  I have tried different things to get my fluids in and have Crystal Lite Lemonade to be the best for my so far.  Before surgery, I didn't like it.   I haven't had to take any pain medication since I came home, but I do feel extremely tired, wondering how long that will last.  Today I ventured upstairs to get a shower and by the time I made it up the stairs I had to sit and rest for awhile before having the energy to take a shower and washing my hair felt like my arms were going to collapse.  I realize I am 61 years old, but can't wait until I have energy to do things that need to be done.  If anyone can give me some feedback on their energy and when it returned and also if anyone had the same problem with the protein powders after surgery I would greatly appreciate it.

Stairs and then a shower was the best sleep aid I ever had! I am two months out and my energy is finally kicking in. What you need and what you have to do now is rest. Get your walking in, but rest. What are you doing for protein? You absolutely have to have your protein. That could be part of your lack of energy as well. I hate protein shakes more than brussel sprouts. My dietitian suggested an ice cream maker. I broke down and bought one. Best thing ever! If you can, go to this link.

Good luck!!!!

hey for your liquid/protien intake , try liquid egg whites and mix them in with a drink that you like. you seriously cant taste the eggs.  keep hydrated and keep moving but don't push yourself too hard, its only been a couple of days and your body is getting used to it

I am 62 and almost 5 wks post op.  I did need pain meds at home but feeling much better.  I also can't stand protein powders.  I can drink no sugar instant breakfast.  There is a tasteless protein powder called Beneprotein that can be mixed in that adds 6 more grams of protein.  I'm just learning what I can and cannot eat right now but did get my energy back just recently.

I'm 66 and, like you, discovered huge changes post-op. I had a huge issue with smells but that went away fairly quickly. The taste thing...not so fast.

when I couldn't stand the protein drinks, I used the Unjury Chicken Broth which is clear and doesn't have the protein taste or smell.

I didn't use any of my pain meds either but must agree with others that you must get in your protein and liquids to heal and regain your energy.

one thing that you might try is a tablespoon of PB2 chocolate -powdered peanut butter. I still use that in my shakes to disguise the protein.  I bought mine at walmart so it's easy to find.

Im five months out from surgery and have more energy than I have had in years. I'm going to the gym four days a week and am having a great time getting my life back.

I will definitely try the pb2. I have the Unjury and will try that tomorrow.  Did u have any problems with your heart racing and feeling shaky after surgery?  My pulse has been a lot higher since surgery then before and with just the slightest activity my blood pressure goes up

No, I don't recall any problems like that.  I would imagine that you may be somewhat dehydrated if you aren't getting those fluids. That could cause the shakiness. I would put in a call to your bariatric team. Mine always returned calls and treated the must mundane questions as important.

It took some time to get enough liquids as water tasted and smelled bad to me. After much experimentation and a long affair with sf grape Koolaid, I settled on diet Snapple.

You are 61 years YOUNG.  I'm happy you made the best decision for you & got your WLS.  I could not drink any protein shakes until 2-3 weeks after surgery & then it was a trial & error thing to find some I did like because like you the kind I'd purchased thankfully just samples of smelled like burnt vanilla; my poor little dog turned her nose up at it and slowly backed away ; )- I did drink some unjury chicken flavor broth type protein during recovery a few times.  My bariatric center recommends unjury - some of it is really good like the chocolate splendor-I kid you not it tastes just like a chocolate shake put some SF chocolate jello pudding in with it & a cup of skim milk or 1% blend it up and WOW.  My Doc recommended premier - & while they are much better & not as chalky as most even with constant shaking and or blending they were still chalky to me.  My fav powders are body fortress whey protein in vanilla available at Walmart http://www.walmart.com/ip/Body-Fortress-Super-Advanced-Whey- Protein-Powder-Vanilla-1.95-LB/10322404 mix mine 1 x day with 1/2 to a whole small banana & I cup-8 ounces of 1% milk & they are so very very good.  You just being so fresh out of surgery & in your recovery probably won't be able to drink maybe 1 protein shake a day probably starting next week & it will take you all day to finish.  I had VSG not RNY but there's lots of postings about folks not being able to finish the protein shakes at first, or find one they really liked before is gross to them after surgery.  I really like the one I sent the link about by body fortress but I really really really like the Atkins Cafe Caramel pre-made shakes.  I was a huge coffee addict before surgery & these drinks quench that. Be patient with yourself you're still very much healing just been a few days since you got this new lease on life.  Rest when you need to & go at things slow & steady.  Your energy levels with increase by about week 2-Month 2 but you have to take I mean HAVE to take your vitamins or just trying to brush your hair will be a major task. B-12 sublinguals melts & Iron are very important to take daily for energy be sure you check with your Doc.  The tiredness will pass but right now your still healing.  My wish for you is a speedy trouble free recovery.  Blessings & Happiness that your life is starting over. Stephanie

I'm with you. I absolutely loved the Unjury Chocolate Splendor made with light soy milk prior to surgery. Can't get it down now. I even tried holding my nose, while drinking.  The only one I can drink now is Premier Protein chocolate drinks. I add ice and drink through a lid with a hole. Drinking from a sippy-type cup helps get it down if you can't smell the protein drinks.  I also bought fat-free powdered milk to boost protein in pudding, creamy soup, etc. Good luck to you!
