HI guys.

i am on day 8 or 9 of raging diarrhea. Been to the NP and got Rx strength anti-diarrheals. That is the only thing that slows it down.

Anyhow, she ran some tests and myliver enzymes are HIgh. My AST and ALT are 58 and 63. Before surgery they were in 18 and 25.

She is starting to think i ran into Hep A in a restaurant.  :(  However, these numbers are low for Hep A infection.

After RNY, did anyone elses liver enzymes elevate?

Is this hepatitus?  I am crapping all the time and am just exhausted.

Thanks for your help

Most (if not all) of us get elevated liver enzymes during rapid weightloss - it's why it's recommended not to drink alcohol for a year as this process is very hard on the liver.

OK thanks KIm!  I shall not get too bend out of shape then.  Perhaps it is *just* a stomach flu.

My liver enzymes ran high for a bit, luckily hepatitis  test came back negative. My doctor kept a close eye on them for a year and all normalized. As for your other symptoms, have you added or taken anything away from your diet recently?

Hope you get feeling better soon, DeeW

Thanks for the response. Did they ever figure out WHY your enzymes were high?  Is this a common side effect or something?  Diet and supplements are the same.  The teas I drink are the same. I havent' even changed my dishsoap!!!

Completely stumped. I seem to be on the mend though. THe night before last, I got 9 straight horus of sleep in without needing to use the toilet. Last night, I got 11 straight hours in!

;)

Thank you

HI 3-B!  The c. diff test was negative. I dont think she tested for listeria.  I will ask on monday. I was at several chain restaurants before the illness.  i have lost 7 lbs in about 6 days. I have never drank so much gatorade in my life.

That's good that you don't have C-Diff.I hope you are feeling better soon.Keep hydrated.

My one month post-op labs showed elevated AST and ALT and they were normal before surgery. My surgeon wasn't concerned so we'll see what my 6 month labs look like in mid-April (he didn't draw labs at my 3 month visit).

While my liver enzymes were elevated (AST and ALT does not necessarily indicate actual liver disease or damage from what I recall in my research), I was not having exhaustion or excessive crapping (I actually have the opposite problem...grrr!).

I am glad your C-Diff was negative, trust me, that is something you should be verrrryyyy happy about because it is particularly nasty and likes to hang around for a while (months!).  Could you be lactose intolerance (assuming you're eating a lot of dairy)?

Do you take pain medication or acetaminophen on a daily basis? It can be hidden in many things like cold/flu medication....or arthritis medication.

I don't think YOU have to really be doing anything differently for your body to be reacting differently. It may just be that your body is different. I THINK processing all the vitamins, proteins, fat, etc....has the liver working full time during this process....so when you add to it something extra like acetaminophen, alcohol, whatever.....it causes it to get annoyed, lol.

Try adding Milk Thistle 400mg twice a day, Vitamin E, and/or NAC (N-acetyl cysteine)....which can be purchased at most Health stores and is sold as a supplement. It helps support the liver in creating glutathione.....(ask your doctor of coarse before taking anything) However, these things should help. I am also constantly worried about my liver because I take acetaminophen daily =/  Anyway, I hope it works out for you, good luck =)
