raging diarrhea for a week-help

Hi Gang. Sorry if this is TMI.  I have had diarrhea for about a week now. It initially started where it would be loose watery stool in the morning. So I figured I ate something that didnt agree with my new pouch (like ground beef) since I am only 2 months out.

Well, it has progressed and now I get raging diarrhea in the morning (i.e. consistently 3am-7am). Then around 2pm (about 2 hours after lunch) and again around 8-9pm (about 2-3 hours after dinner).

I am confused. I feel otherwise fine. NO fever, chills, rashes, headaches, stomache aches or anything. Basically it feels like I got to fart and out comes brown water!

Thinking I was challenging my pouch I backed up to week 3 foods (i..e mac and cheese, potatoes and other soft foods). It did not make a difference.

I tried 2 doses of immodium from 4.30-7:00 am today. It did NOT slow the diarrhea down.  Basically it stops when everything has "passed."  I know because I can identify "stuff" in the toilet. I recognized dinner. :(

My surgeon is in surgery today (so I doubt I will hear back from him; I called his office). I got an appointment with my GP tomorrow morning.

So my questions are:

1) What can this be?

2) I am thinking C.Diff since I was in hospital just 2 months ago and am taking a stomach acid reducing drug (c.diff. is naturally in our colon anyway but it can get out of whack). Will I need a mega-dose of vancomycin since I no longer "absorb" as normal.

3) After I have exhausted the recommended amount of Immodium (just one dose left and it is only 9.30 am), can I move on to pepto bismol or something else. I dont want to challenge my liver.

ON the up swing, I have lost 5 lbs!!!  :)

Lame ..I know. Just trying to see the bright side.

I wish I could help you! I'm too new to the surgery to have much experience with anything like this, but I truly hope there are answers in store for you. I'll be watching because I had some of these same symptoms over the past few days but luckily they went away on their own. And great on the weight loss part though!

Truly do hope it comes out all right in the end! (Sorry...couldn't help myself.)

Warmly,

Jenny:)

This does need to be checked out.  I hope it is not C Diff.

Because it is predictably happening two or three hours after meals it does seem to be diet related.

Some treatments may be probiotics, and fiber supplements.  After surgery it is difficult to get enough fiber and I have to take a fiber supplement every night to avoid diarrhea.

If you think this is C.Diff you need to call our doctor asap.It is highly contagious. I would call your primary. This can make you really ill if it is not taken care of.I know that the bacteria lives inside us already. But you are contagious if you have C.Diff

Well I have 2 of the three risk factors (i.e. stomach acid reducing drugs and was in the hospital in the last two months). I KNOW that it is something contagious. My office mates kids had it, then she got it, and now I have it.

The reason I say c.diff (or any bacteria) is it is getting steadily worse..not better. Like an organism is taking hold in there. If it were just the diet, it would alter as my food choices altered.

:(

I see my doc tomorrow at 7.30 in teh morning!

Thanks for your kindness everyone!

Warm wishes you way.

My surgeon says no to the Pepto Bismol because of aspirin content. Your surgeon might feel differently but I would check with your surgeon's office to see what they say.

If you really think it may be C.Diff I would call your surgeon. You shouldn't have to go having Bms constantly. You can get dehydrated. I am not being snotty.I know someone who had it and it took a long time for her to get back to her normal self.

I have also heard of scar tissue developing around the bowels causing this. But if you have someone in close proximity that had C-diff, it is likely that. Either way, hope you get answers and are on the mend soon!

A couple of thoughts:

It could be c-diff for the reasons you stated. Strange question...does it smell horrible, like something has died inside of you? If so, my money is on c-diff.

Could you be having a dairy or soy allergy? I'm not sure if you're drinking protein shakes, milk, etc.

Another thought...are you taking any supplements around the time you eat and, if so, could you have an allergy or intolerance to something in the supplement?

I'm glad you are getting this checked out...a week of this is a long time. Be prepared to give a sample. =)

Hope you feel better soon.
