Suggestions for Red Robin

HI guys!

Tonight my fiancee and I are going to red robin to celebrate his b-day.  I am in the soft veggie/flakey fish/mac and cheese/cottage cheese/ spaghetti with sauce (no meatballs yet)/ hummus phase. I can have strained soup too. HOwever, I feel it is weird to ask my waiter for strained soup.

So red robin has a fish and chips selection. The problem? I dont liek french fries. Well..actually I do, but I am against them mentally because of the fat and calories and they are a trigger food for me (i  have lots...)  I dont want mac and cheese because it is another trigger food for me.

So I looked at the menu online to see if they had mashed potatoes or baked potatoes..but I didnt see anything listed.  The honest hummus plate is served with raw veggies (which I can have yet).

I am looking for a better side than french fries for my cod. My questions are:

1) does red robin have mashed or baked potatoes?

2) can you steam broccoli to soft and mushy?  I have only gotten it tender crisp..but I have not set out to achieve soft and mushy before.

3) do they have pita bread that I dont know about at red robin?  I might better liek that as a side.

4) any good mushy and healthy sides at RR?  Please dont say coleslaw...that is raw.

Thanks so much in advance!

I would get the fish without a side at all. To me, it would be too early out to try or have some of the other things that you mentioned. A full serving of the fish would even be too much for me.

I dont intend to eat it all at once. Lord no! I challenged my pouch twice (once in hospital by forgetting myself and doing a big swallow of broth..the second was wiht mac and cheese at Bos.Mark).  Those experiences were terrible. The "I am going to puke drool" combined with the feeling of someone standing on my chest.

It is for occasions liek these that god made "The doggy bag!"

PS..I totally intend to warn the waiter of my surgery status in advanced so he isnt shocked when I dont eat much.  I can only have 1/4-1/2 cup food at a meal and I have these collapsible measuring cups by Chef'n from BB&B that I totally take wiht me everywhere in my purse!

Thanks for the suggestion!

You don't owe the waiter (or any other complete stranger) an explanation as to why you do or don't eat something

Of course, if you want to draw attention to yourself, you can do so, but I wanted to point this out to other people reading your post that it is possible to get to be 10 years out and NEVER explaining to anyone why you don't eat much etc.

You also don't have to decline a drink with an explanation - take the water and leave it there or sip it until your food arrives and then pu**** away!

I order the fish and chips - take the breading off the fish and pass the chips to my son or my boyfriend - problem solved!   If you can eat a full serving of fish and are still hungry - I'll be shocked because I can't do it at nearly 10 years out!!!!!

Great idea. I will order broccoli and pass it to him (He is diabetic).

Yay!  And removing the breading is a great idea too!  i am so set for this trip.

Ok. I will not tell the waiter.  When I was a waitress though...I have to admit I was a combo of hyperviligent ("Do you like the food? Is it to your liking?  are you sure you dont want condiments? MOre soda? More water? How about dessert?  Are you saving room for dessert? yada yada) and Ursula (sloshing coffee, exploding coffee pots/sloshing soup).  So..I think I am just afraid of running into "me"!

Tee hee!

You are eating SPAGHETTI!? Seriously? I am just shocked by your post. Totally shocked.

Is there a plan that allows pasta this soon post-op?

Red Robin would be the LAST place I'd eat until at least 6 months out. It really doesn't have a 'good choice' and a place I'd only eat if there was a group I had to go out with and eat.  The last time I was there with my book club I had the FO soup, no bread or croutons and a plain Boca patty and a slice of cheese. I had the soup and then about 1/3 of the patty. That was it.

The fish is deep fried.

The fries are deep fried.

Mashed and baked potatoes are not giving you anything you need right now and in a place like that, I'd guarantee the mashed would be fat laden starch bombs.

I advise you to sit down and talk with your nutritionist, STAT!

-Yes, the one I got from my surgeons office which has the nutritionist in-house. IN fact, it was hand delivered by the NUT.

Even being 17 months out when I go to dinner I always order shrimp ****tail and a dinner salad.  I eat 4 jumbo shrimp and a small portion of the salad with some lime on it.  I've only been to Red Robin once since RNY and I had the Boca burger wrapped in lettuce with cheese on it and ate not even 1/3.  It took me a year before I ever even ordered the salad on the side of my shrimp ****tail, the first year you should just be worried about protein.

The other day when I suggested a protein shake to you Skinny, you advised that protein shakes aren't part of your surgeon's plan.  Potatoes, of any type, aren't going to do anything for you at this point other than give you carbs and take up valuable protein space in your stomach and your protein intake looks pretty low from what you posted the other day.  Fried fish--nope.  Pita bread--nope.  French fries--nope.  Baked potatoes--nope.

Be careful when going out to dinner the first few times.  Nothing worse then having to spew in the middle of eating dinner.

Oh yes! I had a shrimp ****tail almost every night for dinner of our cruise. They are PERFECT and I love that I can add a ton of raw horseradish to the shrimp for a zesty treat!!
