TMI ahead......I had Rny on 12/18 and until yesterday, all my stools have watery. Yesterday there was some substance and it looked normal brown. Today though, I was able to poop a little but more substance but it was black. I am not on iron and I have not been running a fever or in pain. I called the surgeons nurse and left a message and I also have an appt with my primary physician today to go over my meds. I am just wondering if anyone else has experienced black stools and been okay-not having a gi bleed. Kinda freaking out right now and hate having to wait for an answer from the dr.

I am preop and I am not a MD.

I am thinking three  things. One: it is "left over" blood from your surgery working its way down.

Or you could have some bleeding...

Or you ate something that contributes to dark stools. (i.e. beets prunes, purple dyed chips).  did you eat a protein drink with lots of weird dyes in it?

What have you been eating lately?

I think the vets will have better things to add.

Please get in touch with your surgeon...

Just saw my primary dr and he checked the stool slightly positive for blood and did a blood count which my hemoglobin changed just slightly from preop to now which means I haven't lost a lot of blood. Going to monitor the situation and go back in Monday for more blood work. I see my surgeon Tuesday.

ok...keep us posted. Try to keep things in perspective too. You just had surgery...and had the intestines re-routed and cut. So obviously, at some poitn there was some bleeding. Another thing it could be is colon cancer. Have you had an colonoscopy lately? I dont mean to bring you down with the dreaded C word. But it is soemting that it could be...

Hmmm. I generally have never had this kind of issue pre-op so I've never had cause to have a colonoscopy and I am 33 so I haven't needed one because of age. I am hoping that it is old blood from the surgery. My surgeons nurse was going to review the primary dr.s info and consult the oncall surgeon if more steps need to taken.

Glad you got it  checked and that they are following up.  You can't be too careful.  I suspect a surgeon would rather hear from a patient and have it be nothing, than not be notified and have it be a problem left unchecked.

A actively bleeding ulcer can cause this as well. Doesn't hurt to ask for an endoscopy in this case.
