Never full
I had my surgery on November 4th so tomorrow I will be 3 weeks post-op.. I have been able to eat pretty much anything in moderation.. I've attempted to try apple pie, hot Cheetos, carne asada burrito, pizza and even Funyuns. I chew and chew and chew and chew to the point everything is almost a purée ( except the Funyuns they tasted like sand). I've only taken a bite or two that's as brave as I get. I have not had a dumping feeling or a stuck feeling the problem is I never feel full. For breakfast I made 2 hard boiled eggs because that's what I felt like I could eat. I ate 1 entire egg in 15 minutes then took a bite of the second egg and gave up. Not because I felt full but because I was tired of chewing. For lunch I boiled squash with a can of corn some onion slices and a can of tomatoes sauce. I poured 1 cup of soup into a bowl and ate it all excepts 3 spoonfuls of corn. Again because I was tired of chewing. I just ate dinner and boiled pinto beans with ground beef and potatoes with chili and cumin powder. I poured 1 cup of Chilli and potato beans in a bowl and only finished 1/2 cup... Not because I was full... But because it took me 30 minutes to chew that. I wasn't about to spend another 30 minutes chewing.... My surgeons instructions say no snacks and 3 meals a day .. No more or no less.. Have I over stretched my pouch? Has anyone else had this feeling of never being full? Does this change in time or is it all just in my head?
Honestly, my program wouldn't allow any of these foods you have had this early out, never. Corn? It surprises me you can eat that much at one time, I could barely get what you have had in one meal for an entire day.
I have to say, every centre has different rules but yours is one I haven't seen before.
I'm really not suppose to have vegetables yet.. I still have another week till I'm suppose to be able to have steamed or boiled mushy veggies.. I see how everyone post there unable to eat.. That's why I'm concerned I can eat it takes 40 minutes or so to finish specially when I can only eat two bites then take a 5 to 10 minute break before the next spoonful..
Can I ask you a question? If you were given guidelines and told to follow specifics - why were you trying funions and other things I can guarantee you are not part of a healthy diet post surgery. It really concerns me that you would test these boundaries so quickly. Do you know why you are choosing these foods?
Were you given a nutritional plan to follow? Does your surgeon allow their patients to have all of these carbs? Do you eat any protein?
Your nerves have been cut and you might not have a true sensation of fullness for a while. Now, I am only a month out and I'm sure more experienced folks will chime in, but I am still learning what different sensations are and what a full feeling is because it is not like how I used to feel when full.
You didn't mention anything about protein. I was explicitly told that everything I eat must start with protein in order to meet my protein requirement for the day. I find that after I have had 2-3 oz of dense protein, I am definitely full. Were you given a target for your proteins, carbs, and fats? Were you told not to exceed a certain amount of food per meal?
Being only a week ahead of you, I honestly could not imagine trying any of the things you listed for fear of dumping, not meeting my protein requirements, and it seems to go against my goal to relearn how to eat healthy and break my old eating habits because I never want to live in my old body again. What has your NUT said about your not feeling hungry and your current diet?
Besides the potatoes today I thought I loaded up with protein.. Egg, beans and lean ground beef were all on my protein sheet oh and my protein drinks. The powder shakes make me sick so I do "new whey liquid protein fruit punch" it has 42g protein in 3.8 fl oz.. All the junk food I mentioned was not today that was all since my surgery only to see if I had a reaction and it was only a bite or two. I'm not sure about exceeding any amount of food. But I may need to look thru my packet again and see if I'm doing what I'm suppose to just due to the responses I've gotten. I'm not scheduled to see my surgeon for three more weeks. I've only had to call my surgeon once since my surgery. And that was because 5 days post op I was already walking 3-4 hours at a time at the mall.. Then resting an hour and back at it. Until i was walking an I felt like some one just stabbed me left of my belly button.. After that I followed the walking instructions to a T .. My surgeon said I just over did it to take it easy..
New Whey protein is made from crappy collagen protein, which I understand we do not absorb. I think Yes Whey is made from the appropriate protein. In your post, apart from the egg, carne asade burrito and beans, you didn't mention protein, just carbs, which is why I asked.
I would assume you were given a guide that said to not exceed 1/4 or 1/2 cup of food at one time, if you weren't instructed about this I would be shocked and have serious concerns regarding my surgeon.
I noticed you said you would take a bite then go do laundry or whatever while you were chewing. You are free to do as you please, but a big component of changing your eating behavior is spending time with your food. Like sitting at a table, no****ching tv or doing anything else. I was instructed to only eat for 20-30 minutes because if it took you longer, essentially you are grazing because the food is passing through your pouch and you never feel full. Are you waiting 30-60 minutes after eating before you drink.
You have been so fortunate to have surgery, why would you even want to toy with junk food right now? That would be a big slippery slope for me.
I had no idea that my protein drink was crappy.. Time to research that!!! I wasn't given a portion or serving size guide. Only told to eat 3x a day until no longer hungry. Everywhere else says to eat 6 mini meals a day.. A spoon or two.. I would much rather do that.. I did read where it says to not graze and only sit down and eat for 30 minutes .. I usually try to finish my meals within 15 to 30 minutes...I'm not looking to fail at this.. It's a complete life change .. I don't have all the answers and I'm not sure I'm doing this right at all.. That's why I'm here.. :)
