Office/Task Chairs

Surgery cant come soon enough for me.

In addition to being chunky and having a hell of a time finding a wedding dress (more on the stuffed sausage experience later), I needed to pick up a home office/task chair for my sewing machine.

Now at work, eons ago...my pneumatic lift in my chair would just drop me at random times. It made for a wild work day. Sort of like my own amusement park.  :)

Eventually someone got fired and I switched my chairs for theirs.  Hahahaha. No problems since.

Now I am at home, trying to find something armless with lumbar support that will work with my sewing machine table. Did you know MOST office/task chairs are rated to 225-250 lbs?

Here i am at 278 (this morning).

Ugh. More fat discrimination...more of the world just says "You!  You don't "fit" in.  We shall shun you since we cant stone you...."

I think that is worst. The deliberate shunning of furniture, clothes, pattern, wedding dress and car designers It is liek they are saying, "You aren't allowed to be happy or successful in life and have the accoutrements of a happy successful person" (i.e. great expensive WOOD furniture, pretty wedding dresses, and other pretty clothes).

So, does anyone have a brand of office or task chair that they like that can support all wonderful, successful, and happy 278 lbs of me?

I dont want the "amusement park phenomen" to happen while running an electric sewing machine or serger (with those cutting blades)!  I may lose a finger or draw blood if I unexpectedly get "dropped"!!!

Thanks in advance.

We have Herman Miller Aeron and Mirra chairs in our homes for use at desks and work tables. I love them! They do have arms, but they are very easy to adjust and one scrap table I have with a lower edge, I simply put the arms all the way down.

I love that you can order the chairs in a variety of colors and they last FOREVER! We have one Aeron chair that is over 12 years old, still going strong!  You can order without arms, IIRC, and the weight limit is at least 300 on the medium and large, but even at 354 my husband used his without ever having ANY issues with it at all!

I do not have a recommendation, but I have broken my share of chairs in the past.

But if you are about to have surgery, why worry about one for your current weight, just get something and know it will work till you are smaller and then beyond.

All the furniture that holds heavier weights costs more.

Thanks for your posts.

Based upon someone's recommendation above, I got an armless Hermon miller aeron B sized (i.e. medium sized chair)> It is rated for at least 250 lbs.  It will work even when I get smaller.

Someone asked why get it now. It is a long story but I have had surgery on L5-S1.  The current chair that I drag to the sewing machine from the kitchen table has NO lumbar support and after half a day of playing on my sewing machine, my back is a mess. My condo layout is odd, but I would have to drag my office chair from one side of the condo, down the hallway, move living room furniture to get the office chair through, move the living room furniture back, just to be able to have some sewing fun. MOving heavy furniture back and forth is hard on backs.  Not having lumbar support is hard on backs.

After wrecking my back once, I am hyperparanoid about any discomfort my discs have (as opposed to muscle issues).

Thanks for your support. I am really excited to be getting this chair and having a comfortable sewing experience again.

Who likes rigid chairs...the harder the better.

PS..The amusement park effect is most entertaining when one has a mugful of hot coffee in hand...

I can't even say how much I like the Aeron chairs.  We had them at my last job they are amazing for back support and very comfortable.

Speaking about good deals, if any of ya'all live in the Northern Virginia area, I can not say enough good things about the healthy back store. They are small regional (just 10 stores) and they have the best customer service. They dont work on commission, work together for the good of corporation, have great customer service, and know where all the products are. For example, yesterday I called the gainesville store and wanted to purchase the chair. Gainesville didnt have it in stock but they knew that it was in Fairfax and that it was on Clearance.

Woo hoo!  So I called the Fairfax store and further negiotated the clearance price down. They also did not charge the assembly fee (I snort at that. I have tools and will use them...growing up without a Dad....). Couldnt get the sales tax removed but all in all I got a $699 charge + lumbar support for $532.14.  So they essentially reduced the cost of the chair $217.

:)  That makes me very happy. It makes me a return customer. It makes the fiancee and I want to register for a temperpedic mattress there... My current one is 3 years old, cheap, and has developed a "wallow" where I lay.

Something to save my pennies for. I figure after RNY, my food bill will be a fraction of what it was...

That is an AWESOME price and while most things are very DIY friendly, having the HM chair put together is FOR SURE worth it! I had no idea it was such a small chain, we have a Healthy Back store in Charlotte, too!

PetHair-Well I know that there are 10 in the area...an outlet, gainesville, fairfax, alexandria, bethesda, rockville.

So maybe Charlottee is "in the area?"

I just like the fact that they negiotate. If the price isnt low enough today, it MAY be next month when a new quota/whatever comes out.

Big Boxes dont negotiate. I can stand walmart for that reason.

Maybe I watched too much "Price is Right" and "Lets Make a Deal" as a kid?
