I now know why I keep developing kidney stones. This is going to be tricky...
Is that hypercalciuria also hard on the kidney function ie. your GFR?

Beware the Statistics Quoters
The urologist didn't indicate the extra calcium would impact GFR or any other actual kidney function; he just indicated that the more calcium and sodium the kidney has to process, the greater the likelihood of formation of stones. I understand lowering the sodium,, it I still have to do some reading on exactly how the thiazide decreases the calcium.

I'm glad you finally received some answers. I had a kidney stone a few months ago but I haven't had any studies done. Hoping they don't come back.
I have no advice to offer, but have learned a lot on this thread. Best of luck Lora, and please let us know how it works out.

I don't have much to add to this except have you tried the low sodium ham & turkey? when I was at the grocery a few weeks ago a woman asked to try the low sodium ham and she was very pleased, just ask for a sample:) good luck, sounds like you are putting a good plan together.

Asking for a sample is a great idea. I did eat low salt ham right after surgery because the regular was too salty tasting. Lately I have been splurging on Honeybaked ham. Guess it will have to be an occasional "treat" instead.

You know what I will suggest, and you can try it or not, but I would start with the addition of lemon juice to your diet. And lots of it. Lemon water is easy to tolerate even if you are not a huge fan of lemon like I am. I am on a diet to help my arthritis because it sucks and I want to be in less pain, I have reduced my protein to about 45 grams a day and stopped eating all red meat and pork, only fat free chicken passes my lips now in the way of meat and occasionally shrimp on special occasions. I have been on this brown rice diet and honestly I do feel better, my bf thinks its all hocus pocus but I really do feel like it is having a beneficial effect and I seem to be full longer and eat less because rice is my first course at dinner. But then again I never follow traditional medical practice because I don't believe in chemical companies getting rich and ruling our health care.
I have been drinking lemonade with Splenda through the summer and adding lemon juice to tea occasionally since the weather has been cooler. Hard to say whether it is helping or not, but it certainly isn't hurting!
We will check my protein level again in December, along with my calcium, Vit D, and iron (which were all either in flux or were things where i made dosage changes). If it is still ok with me having dropped it to 60-70, I will probably drop back to right at 60 so I can eliminate some additional dairy (and a few calories along with it).
