Your experience. Is it worth it?
Yes. Diabetes runs in my family. Amputations, blindness and heart problems. I left the hospital with diabetes in remission.
Good Luck to you.

Beware the Statistics Quoters
I am only 4 months out but I would do it again in a heartbeat. My BMI was well over 50+, I had pre-diabetes since 2006, an ankle with arthritis settling in (I have plates and screws in it and the excess weight was really hurting it badly), declining ease of mobility and I have a 3 year old to keep up after and it was just no longer possible to function. I've lost 74 lbs. so far (incl. 7 lbs. from my 2-day pre-op liquid diet) and my health has done a complete 360. My family health history put me at high risk too as my father is obese with heart disease and a-fib, first heart attack at only 47. I chose RNY despite being only 25 due to these health issues and risk factors as well as being obese for my entire life. I wanted to enjoy quality of life now and not continue on the path of countless diets and lifestyle changes that failed again and again. Hundreds of pounds lost and gained over time.
I was off my metformin immediately after surgery and have very normal blood sugar levels now, my joints feel a thousand times better and my quality of life has hugely improved. My nutritional stats have also never been better, my D3 levels more than doubled, they are 68 now and were 30 pre-op, B-12 was very low pre-op and now over 800. No dumping, no food intolerances, etc. those are not the norm although yes they can happen (and some welcome the dumping effect so as to help abstain from very fatty/sugary foods as those are what typically provoke it). With a BMI that high as I'm sure you know you're at high risk for a lot of serious co-morbidities so were it me, I would do the RNY, but ultimately this is a very serious decision that you should research backwards and forwards and weigh the pros vs. cons. If you cannot find anyone who will do a DS in your state (and if memory serves me medicaid does not cover procedures out of your state right?) then I would consider it.
