I want DS. The catch? No one in my state will do it that takes my insurance (Medicare/medicaid). One does it only as a revision from RNY. Most the others are strongly against DS. So it looks like I'm going to be getting a RNY.

But I've heard so much bad stuff - people gaining all their weight back, dumping syndrome with eating most foods, stuff like that. Should I still get the RNY? I have a BMI of 60, something has to give. If you had it to do all over again, would you?

Yeah, I'd do it all over again.

Most people do not gain all their weight back.  But it is possible to regain with any surgery, even the DS.

Only about 30% of RNY folks get dumping syndrome at all, and it's something that happens when you eat too much sugar.  Most people can tolerate most foods.  Some people can tolerate absolutely anything.  But no one dumps on most foods, unless all they are is cookies, candy, cake, etc.  Things like lean meats and veggies will not cause dumping.

Can you point me to your reference for this statistic?  I am not arguing, just want to read the research ;)

I don't have a reference for it.  It's the number I hear most often from different people.  But I can't point to a study that backs it up.

I'm 7 months out, down 93 pounds, and would do it again in a New York minute!! No regrets. I don't dump unless I forget I had surgery and eat too many carbs like rice or sugar. And yes, that happens occasionally. I had Type 2 Diabetes which is now in remission, and have been recently diagnosed with breast cancer. Even with chemotherapy I still feel better now than I have in years.

I am 3 weeks out and would do it again. Not a happy camper the first few days, with the pain. I am a wimp. But now I dont remember how much it hurt. I can see the rest of my life and it is long and healthy. Best of luck, whatever you decide.

.I would do it again! I am 13 months out and have gone from 258.5 to 123. My blood sugar, cholesterol and blood pressure all are normal now. I can buy my clothes anywhere now and have more energy than ever before. I love exercise and my new healthy life now and wish I had had surgery sooner!
