I would have INSISTED on dilaudid! It makes me crazy when medical professionals don't have a clue.

Poor thing--I hope they pass soon and you feel better!

Please consult your surgeon & nutritionist for how to do it their way.  Biggest regret? Not doing this 10 years ago! Every day is better than the day before...and it was a pretty great day!

I also got Tordol and Dilaudid for two days post op.  I cannot take morphine or Lor Tab so he told me he would give me the Tordol and Diluadid.  I assumed since it was through an IV and not directly in the pouch it would be okay but have read since then that is not the case.    It gave me great pain relief and thankfully I didn't suffer any consequences because of it.  It is weird the differences in doctors.

A surgeon told me that one would not develop an ulcer from a dose or two of NSAIDs.   He said the ulcer would have already been present in these cases and the NSAID aggravated what was already there.   He was adamant that  RNY patients should not take NSAIDs on a regular basis.  That being said, I do not plan to use NSAIDs.

Just FYI, one of the people here a few years ago absolutely did develop an ulcer from a single dose of Toradol (which is a strong NSAID and has been described as an NSAID on steroids, LOL), and a woman in our in-person support group developed an ulcer after two days in the hospital with Toradol twice a day (so four doses).

It isn't likely, but your surgeons shouldn't be saying it cannot happen because it can.

Thank you everyone for your input! I think from here on out, if an occasion arises where I need to go back to the ER I will just insist on having something else.

You probably will not get an ulcer from one dose of Toradol but it has happened to a few people.  Personally, I would just refuse any NSAIDS in the ER.

I was also given Tordol for two days after surgery - every four hours.  How could a bariatric surgeon order this medication???

Im not able to post the links right now cause i am in the hospital. There are peer reviewed articles published from Johns Hopskins stating that many toredol affects the entire body. Many MD do not have specific CEU' related to pain managent post RNY. Although the studies are conlicting, there is a higher correlation bt ulcer And rny than not. Mds like to keep there options open for pain management, and may not be aware of the current research i just described. While some patients may not get ulcers, the increased associated risk has been well documented in the literature. I recently recovered from an ulcer and chose to be in pain after my mastecromy rather than run the risk of getting the ulcer reactivated again. The article i mentioned above suggested short term use of narcotics over toredol in patients with history of ulcer or a picky pouch. My surgeon didnt see it that way and would not order anything else. I later gave him a copy of the article. Essentially it puts nsaids into the entire body rather than a localized area. So there is risk. Maybe not end of the world risk, but for me personally i refused it. Based on my personal history and doctor orders from my bariatric surgeon and my scholarly research. Might be worth it to let treating doctors talk to bypass docs so they can coordinate care.
