OT: I got my diploma in the mail! But...
My diploma came in the mail today. I was SO excited. I invested 7 years of my life and $50K to get that piece of paper!!
At first, I was a little disappointed that it wasn't a giant sized one like my dentist and a Psychiatrist friend have (it is the same size as all my other ones, so I guess you have to go to Med School and become THAT kind of doctor to get a giant diploma).
Then I looked at it, and noticed that my middle name is spelled wrong!!! They added an "e" to the end of it! This is not an Ivy League university, but it isn't some shady online place that uses a P.O. Box in Nowhere, North Dakota, either! How do they get a name wrong?!? The worst part is that when I called them, they told me that I have to send it back to them in order to get a new one sent and that it will take 6-8 weeks to get a replacement.
The really ironic thing is that a long time ago (in a galaxy far, far away) I also "gave back" my B.A. diploma! Because of something that the registrar's office didn't tell students about calculation of GPA when you were a transfer student, I missed the cutoff for magn *** laude by one tenth of one point, so I complained to the registrar (they updated their information the following term!), have her my diploma (I made a copy of it first, just for fun), I watched her erase my degree in the computer (!), and then I took one more class for the one additional 'A' I needed to go from cum laude to magn *** laude. My mother though I was insane for turning in my diploma!
Sigh... Well, hopefully, I will have it by Thanksgiving. They did tell me they would provide two official transcripts at no charge in the meantime in case I need proof of degree confirmation, but somehow a transcript isn't nearly as exciting as a diploma.

You don't drown by falling in the water. You drown by staying there.
First of all, congratulations on your diploma! My doctorate was the only graduation I walked for and celebrated it took so long and cost so much!
My name gets misspelled regularly. My last name starts with an "I" and people are always changing it to an "L" because they can't imagine a name that starts with a vowel. It's correct on my diplomas (thank god), but we recently closed on a house and the agent for the seller handed me the title with my name spelled wrong like it was no big deal. She offered to correct it on the piece of paper, but not the file. My husband stopped her (we have different last names) and pointed out that this would go on my credit report and I'd have an entire new fiscal identity, so they fixed it. But I think it might have gotten out there in the miasma of credit identity. It's so frustrating.

It is good that you sent it back to be corrected. You spent so much time, energy of your life (not to mention $$$) that it needs to be correct. True it will take a few more weeks to get it back corrected but you will look at it for years. You don't want to look at the misspelling to impact the pride you must feel at this wonderful success.
Again, congratulations and all the best to you!

Hooray!I would send it back too. I changed my original name from something very unprounceable to something rather easy, sand it's still spelled wrong. So i stick to an acronym on the message board..Breathe In Breathe Out..bibo. Every one of my diplomas was mis spelled, so that was part of the reason I changed my name altogether. I would have done exactly the same thing, and taken an extra class to have the magn *** laude too. It can mean extra on a resume, at least. Plus knowing that you did it, instead of having to live with having missed it by a tenth of a point. Really glad you got your doctorate. That's super special. A copy place should be able to enlarge it for you... in color!
First of all: CONGRATULATIONS!!
Second, I would totally be disappointed too. I hope it gets back to you very quickly!!
