Sleep Study
I had my sleep study about a week and a half ago. It was awful. I couldn't get comfortable or sleep. I would be shocked if they got any data that was relevant. I truly don't think I have sleep apnea or any sleep problems because I am not tired during the day, wake up fine and don't need caffeine - but this is a requirement of my surgeon.
So, I get a call today that they want me to come back and this time use the machine. No one has discussed the results with me nor told me why I have to come back. I was then told to call my surgeon to discuss results and when I did they said they hadn't received them. I am frustrated! It was literally a terrible experience and I was off for several days after due to no sleep. I feel like they just default to having people come back and use the machine when they don't have clear data showing there is no sleep issues.
Anyone else go thru this?! Any advice? I am just dreading this and I don't want to go back. I feel it isn't necessary...
I would ask whoever is ordering the new study for more information. If indeed they did not get good data or if they did and it showed a problem you need to get that info. I honestly did not feel I had any sleep problems and did the study. Showed I did have some mild apnea. Pulmonologist then had me do any overnight (at home) oxygen level test and that was more of a problem. Her biggest concern was with me having surgery and going under anesthesia breathing afterwards when sleeping could be compromised and lead to further problems. I still have my CPAP and oxygen concentrator at night. Don't like it but she said once I lose another 25 lbs. she will have me undergo another sleep study and see if I can't get rid of all of it.
The night of the sleep study was not fun. Most people have trouble falling asleep. I kept laying there thinking I have to go to sleep. That didn't help. Sometime during the night I did get to sleep obviously. I did take off the next day and went home and slept. After tackling the globs of stuff in my hair.
Hang in there - hopefully the retest will show nothing and you will soon be on your way.

I would be VERY annoyed that they did not put the machine on while you were there the first time. That is what they did with my husband and seriously everyone I know that has had a sleep study unless they were given the all clear. Are they going to charge you for another night? They are almost 1800$ here, I'd be right on the edge of furious if they were shaking me down for another fee! I would tell them you need to know exactly what the situation is. If this is a 'give it a try' situation, I would pass. If this is a 'we detected apnea and want to try a machine' situation I'd press back HARD and find out why they did not address it right then and there.
This is highly unprofessional, IMO. Sorry you are going through it. My husband took days to get the glue out of his very thick hair, he'd have been uber unhappy if he'd had to go back and if I'd had to pay another 10% for one, I'd have been torqued!
HW333--SW 289--GW of 160 5' 11" woman. I only know the way I know & when you ask for input/advice, you'll get the way I've been successful through my surgeon & nutritionist. Please consult your surgeon & nutritionist for how to do it their way. Biggest regret? Not doing this 10 years ago! Every day is better than the day before...and it was a pretty great day!
I had to go back 2x. The first time was for the study itself and the second time was to set my CPAP machine. Neither were great experiences.
Also, when I had my sleep study they said explicitly not to take a sleep aid. So definitily clear that with the technician before taking anything to help you go to sleep.
Good Luck!
