diet soda
I've been out for several years and still can't drink it. Well..thats not entirely true..I can drink it but you don't wanna be ANYWHERE around me when I do!! It is an awful feeling and causes large amounts of gas. I wasn't a huge soda drinker before surgery so it hasn't bothered me much. I wish sweets and bread would affect me the same way;(

I was a huge Diet Coke drinker before surgery. I gave it up six months before surgery and did not touch it for three years. Then my husband got cancer and died and I was depressed and felt like I needed Prozac, alcohol or Coke Zero.
I was careful about it at first, then after a few years, I was back to drinking an eight pack of 20 ounce bottles in a day. I finally went off it again, tried it a few times, and now it makes me too nervous. I don't use any other form of caffeine.
If you are an addict, it is easy for the addiction to come back. I do have Diet 7UP, diet root beer, or diet ginger ale once in a while. I am not addicted to them.
I sip a bit here and there if I want to. It is just too fizzy for me.
I do not see a need to build up a tolerance to incorporate it back into my diet. It just is not necessary.
I also don't see anything wrong with diet soda. I do think drinking regular sodas should be avoided because of the calories. I have a post op friend at work that drinks a regular coke and a eats M&M's daily....and wonders about the regain.
I drink Diet Dr. Pepper sometimes. I feel it is much better to drink something with zero calories rather than other types of drinks that have calories. Diet soda doesn't make my stomach explode either. I do not eat more because of diet soda and it hasn't hindered my weight loss. Most of the time I drink sugar free tea which probably has just as many chemicals. I started drinking diet soda at about 4 months out.

I used to drink a two liter bottle of diet soda every day before surgery, but now the only time I have it is at the movies. The carbonation in the fountain variety is much less than from a bottle, and it doesn't bother me at all.
