Crazy lady telling me about surgery.... is this true for all or just for some?
I didn't have a period until 4 months post op but I always had irregular periods so that's nothing new for me.
If you listen to what everyone says and take it all to heart u would never have the surgery.
U got this!! . Good luck!!
I think WLS is like pregnancy -- everybody has an opinion or a story about their husband's coworker's daughter's cousin who died during surgery or regained 1,000 pounds one year after their RNY. It's all part of the journey and you just need to smile and say "thanks for sharing." I think it is important to be educated about side effects, but you need to keep that in perspective and make an informed decision. Good luck!
Everything she told you sounds pretty extreme...Yes you run a chance of developing lactose (or other food) intolerances. My period has been normal, on time since surgery, I have never heard of anyone having a "6 month period", that sounds pretty rare and never seen it listed as a possible effect of the surgery before in any of my research...I did have my first post-op period shortly after surgery, maybe a week after, but my surgeon said to expect that after any surgery as it's messing up your hormones and throws your body through a loop. It lasted the same length of time it always does and the second one came on time. I can eat fruit, so far I can tolerate blueberries, strawberries and banana just fine, but portion control is everything (and I don't have it often and not daily at all, because all my focus is on protein).
Most people have no problem eating fruit or dairy products after RNY. Some people become lactose intolerant, and a few people have trouble with even natural fruit sugars (but even those people can eat fruit... They just have to be careful with what kind and how much).
Most people lose some hair. Some people lose a little and some lose a lot (and most people are somewhere in the middle).
Yes, surgery and losing weight can wreak havoc with your hormones, but I have never heard of anyone who had a 6-month period.
Don't stress over what this woman told your husband.

You don't drown by falling in the water. You drown by staying there.
My period was regular before surgery and has not skipped a beat since. (6 months).
I have not dumped - but I have not pushed the sugar envelope either.
I eat lots of fruit. Especially watermelon, cantaloupe and bananas. My surgeon suggested them to work on my potassium.
I can tolerate milk just fine.
The only thing that has ever made me nauseous was eating a tortilla chip with Salsa at a Mexican restaurant. Lesson learned. I didn't need it anyway.
I am very much losing my hair and it makes me very sad. I love my hair.
My best friends looks sideways at sugar and dumps. Her periods were never regular and still are not. She has lost a lot of hair and can't tolerate eggs. However, if you ask her - she would do this again in a heartbeat.
I LOVE watermelon. I have just a few bites but I'm certain it is a slider food for me. It's high in sugar and I do try to keep carbs low, but I've had no dumping with the little bit I've had. Also, my period started right after I was released from the hospital, and it was off schedule. It lasted about 2 weeks, getting progressively lighter. Otherwise it's no problem. On the other hand, I had problems with the anti-coagulant Lovenox. My surgeon addressed all the problems as they arose, I had a longer than normal recovery, and certainly had buyer's remorse for a couple of weeks. Now at almost 3 months out, I'm doing very well. It's definitely a different life now that food is a requirement and not especially enjoyable, but I'm learning as I go. Chances are you'll be fine and if you do have any problem, you'll get help and/or find answers as you need them.

I DO dump on fructose. Small amounts of strawberries or blueberries, cantaloupe are fine (1/4 cup or less) one bite of banana ( yes bite). Other than that .... I'm gone.
No problem with milk or other dairy.
My period was a bit "off" for a few months but straightened right out back to every 4 weeks like clockwork and I am 45!
I lost a tiny bit of hair month 4 and 5. Nobody ever noticed and I am now 10 months out and it's all grown back.
The "shoulder pain" you speak of is usually from the gas during the laparoscopic procedure. For some people, it settles in their shoulder. Mine decided to land right in the middle of my chest like I had an elephant sitting in it. No pain in my shoulder at all.
Keep doing your research and remember everybody's experience is different.
Good luck on your journey!
I haven't had any trouble with fruit or milk. I know some people have different foods that can be difficult for them. My friend cannot tolerate milk well. I have been on it since a few days after surgery. Also-my time of the month came early (a few days after surgery-which was about a week early) but it lasted a normal amount of time. Everyone's experience is different.I have to say that my experience has been easier than expected-Praise the Lord!
Best wishes! You will be amazed at how your body transforms!!
Hugs,
Pam
