Honey vs sugar?

I just discovered this amazing honey (vanilla bean honey, seriously, to die for) at our local farmer's market and think I'm addicted already. I know that I can't have sugar after the surgery, but is honey ok? Or will/could it cause me to dump? I thought I'd ask my "new family" and see if anyone could help me out!

No it's sugar no matter how you look at it.  Remember only 30 % of all Gastric Bypass patients dump which leaves 70% that don't.  So don't depend on dumping to keep you from eating candy and sweets because many can eat that crap just fine and end up on a roller coaster.  Also don't let this dumping as a main factor for having the RNY.  It may never apply to you.  Good luck!  Jane kiss

I have used a tsp of local honey in my tea without issues, my dietician says a small amount occasionally is fine. But your body does read it as sugar.

There is no meaningful difference between honey and sugar in this context.  Sugar is sugar.

well its still a sugar, but at least it is a natural sugar, not a bunch of chemicals, like most of the sugar free alternatives. there is no such thing as sugar free honey, that is honey flavored chemicals in my opinion. i use raw fresh honey, sometimes it still has the honey comb with it, raw unprocessed sugar, molasses, when i bake or when i need to sweeten something, i find that when i use these, i use alot less than what the recipe calls for. i try to stay away from all fake sugars, and or the sugar alcohols, they tear me up worse than the real sugar does. you just have to find what will work with you and your food plan, and where you are in your weight loss journey.

have a blessed day

Most long term RNY who are successful - will tell you that honey is off the list.   Maybe 1 tsp once in a while... It is sugar..  some people may not have issue with dumping on it - but sugar is sugar - and in liquid form it is absorb very fast.

Some people like and use agave syrup - in my book this is as bad as HFCS (HF corn syrup).  Fructose is processed by our body into fat. Thanks but no thanks.

I agree with the others - sadly, honey is still sugar, and will be treated as such by your body. I personally don't like the taste of the agave nectar, hate the thought of chemicals in artificial sweeteners, and dump on sugar alcohols. My sweetener of choice is stevia, of which there are several brands to choose from in almost any grocery store these days. It's fairly inexpensive, and has a nice sweet flavor.

That honey you described sounds sooooo good - if you can moderate it, it would still be ok to have a teaspoon of it once in a while. Good luck to you!

It is still sugar.  You might dump on it.  Only about 30% of folks dump after RNY so that means 70% can tolerate sugar and honey just fine.  Sugar and honey both have a lot of calories so they are not things we should eat a lot of.  However, even most people that do dump can tolerate small amounts of sugar.  I can eat up to 15 grams without any problem.

Thanks for the responses! Sorry if it seems like stupid questions I'm asking....but I want to be prepared. Basically, I need to eat this honey and forget about it. P.S. I'm not COUNTING on dumping....but, I'd rather assume I can/will and be pleasantly surprised if I don't.
