Thinking of while you were recovering in the hospital and at home, is there anything that you wish you would have thought about or been told earlier to bring with to the hospital or get to help you with your new lifestyle? Anything from a nail clipper in your hospital bag to a food scale at home...

A FAN !!  when I came back from surgery, I was burning up!!  My room was on the west side of the hospital with the afternoon sun which did not help.... I had this little medical assistant going all over the hospital looking for one.. she did find me one and they let me keep it the whole time I was there..... I did ask if they would have let me bring my own and they said yes, for bariatric patients they do let you bring it, they just have their electrical staff check it out for you ..... so that is the only thing that came up for me.  Oh and bring some comfy shorts and a t'shirt to walk around in, so you are not walking up and down the halls in a gown!!  GOOD LUCK!! it is all worth it!!

That's interesting that they made someone check your fan, when I had my surgery years ago it was between seasons and it was so hot in our room my boyfriend went to home depot and bought a beautiful stand up oscilating fan, no one checked it but all the nurses hung out in our room because not only was it the coolest place but my boyfriend sent stargazer lillies and my roommates husband sent her lillies also, so our room smelled amazing.  It was pretty much the hang out with the lights off for a couple of days during my stay.

What I brought that I used all the time was lip balm because your mouth will be parched, I brought skin cleansing pads because my skin is oily and I can't stand feeling like my face is dirty.  I brought and wore home all my normal makeup.  There was no way I was leaving the hospital looking like I was sick.  A hair brush felt good since I didn't get to shower until day 3.  The other thing I suggest is your pillow from home, at least one, if not two.  They have the worst pillows at the hospital.

Oh and my best tip has nothing to do with what to bring but has everything to do with what to say.  I was very queasy after my gallbladder surgery prior to my wls, so a friend recommended to me when I was getting gastric bypass to tell the anaestesia doctor to give me everything in his bag of tricks to prevent nausea.  He did and it was a miracle, I sat in my room feeling fine while my roommate dry heaved for 3 days straight.  Whatever they gave me worked like a charm because I told the doctors the same thing when I had my plastics and I was not nauseous at all.  Really queasy while you have anything going on with your stomach sucks.

Okay what not to bring to the hospital.  A comedian.  My boyfriend is funny, when he tries and even when he doesn't.  My roommate told him he better knock it off of she was gonna take him out in the hall and rough him up. It was truly hysterical, never laughed so hard in so much pain in my life.  But it was worth it, my bf was terrific and everything he did for me at the hospital and with my son was so gratefully appreciated.

Good Luck!

I never thought about a fan, but wanted one in the hospital.  They brought me a very nice, quiet clip-on fan that my insurance paid for and sent me home with it.  I still enjoy it from time to time.  They said patients have to use a fan they provide due to safety concerns and possible germ issues.  Interesting how things differ from hospital to hospital.

I brought my own gowns and a housecoat.  The only things I really used was stuff for a shower.  The one thing I brought that was wonderful was mouthwash.  When you have that period where you cant drink you can brush your teeth and use the mouthwash and it helps somewhat. Especially after taking liquid or crushed meds.  Helps you get that taste out of your mouth.  I also brought chapstick.

I brought it, but it's worth mentioning again. Bring lip balm. It's an absolute necessity.

I always overpack....but I will say the most essential thing I took was a pillow...which was needed if I wanted to cough and the ride home...if you hold it on your stomach....it doesn't hurt so bad to cough or bumps along the way...we had a 2.5 hour drive home...and I was worried about it.

Good Luck!

Chapstick and underwear. Shampoo and toothbrush, brush. If you have an iv you can't put on anything on top. But you can put on panties after they remove the catheter.  That is it!  Good luck!
