Life can be exhausting, both good and bad. OT and somewhat ranting (UPDATED)
The good news is that, despite a very anxiety-filled weekend (unrelated) where I accomplished very little of anything, the final (?!?) version of my dissertation has been submitted. I still have to do a defense, but should still be on track for an August diploma!! Has been a long 5 and a half years!
The not so good news is that first thing this morning at work, I discovered that my company hired a man (for OUR team,no less) whom I hired and then fired less than two weeks later back in 2006 when I was working for a different company. After only a week with the company, I had already been made aware of complaints by three different women about inappropriate comments by him, including him telling the big boss's secretary that he had a foot fetish and she had beautiful feet. When I raised the issue with him, and told him that he needed to keep his conversations with them professional and appropriate, he told me that I was one to talk since earlier in the week I had told everyone that I was getting a massage. When I told him I didn't understand what was Inappropriate about me simply telling the people that reported to me (in a group conversation) that I was leaving work a half hour early for a massage, he said something about how that puts images of me laying on a massage table covered only with a sheet on their minds! WTF?!? Only a pervert takes a simple comment about a massage appointment and generates an image of his BOSS naked under a sheet on a massage table!
I don't even remember what precipitated me doing a verification check on his employment history (normally that is done by the Hr folks). But I did (paid the $12 out of my own pocket) and discovered that he had lied on his résumé.Things like saying he had worked for one company for over 2 years when the database showed that he only worked for them for a couple of months and then worked for another company for a short period during that time (and was, presumably, unemployed during the rest of that time). So we fired him for falsifying his employment history.
Fortunately, that was BEFORE my RNY and since he was only actually in the office for about 6 days before we fired him, I don't think he recognized me, even by voice. (I have never been so happy to be almost 200 pounds less!!) I had to talk to one of our Senior Managers, though, and tell her about my previous experience with him. She notified the top manager and contacted HR to find out if they did an employment verification (they usually do, so I was surprised that they hired him) because the one falsification mentioned above is still on the resume AND it show he was employed by another company continuously from 2004-2011, but he was unemployed when I hired/fired him in 2006!
i do NOT want to work with this guy! Ok, MAYBE he has gotten some professional help and straightened up, but he still creeps me out and makes me nervous. Not to mention how awkward it will be if he ever figures out who I am! I think the chances are good that they will discover the falsification and fire him eventually, but I would still like to work from home tomorrow and not have to deal with him while they are looking into it. As far as I know, however, no one said anything about the issue to my direct supervisor yet (who hired him), so I cannot really justify working from home. Ugh. The LAST thing I need is more stress at work.
Ok, I am done venting. I obviously can't talk to anyone at work about it...

You don't drown by falling in the water. You drown by staying there.
Doesn't anyone bother to check references before hiring someone? I always did when I was responsible for hiring employees. But if he keeps lying on his resume and getting hired anyone, no one must bother to check.

I don't get it, either, especially with the online employment verification databases! Maybe they only check the most recent job...? I know this company verified mine because there was a slight problem with them getting all the information they needed and I had to provide a copy of my offer letter from my previous company to prove my start date there.

Hopefully, your HR department will get that check done quickly. I work in HR & those reports usually come in pretty quickly. Of course I know that it is a process and the whole thing sometimes takes more time than anticipated. Is there a possibility that when HR gets the reference verifications back, they may put him on paid leave until decisions are made and processes are followed? Meanwhile, I would say stay as far away as possible and take meticulous notes of anything that happens.
How difficult! I'm sorry you are going through this. However, congratulations on getting your final draft of dissertation submitted! Way to go!

Oh good lord. That sounds like a whole lot of YUCK for one week! That guy sounds like quite the character - and I do NOT mean that in a good way at all. I can understand why you're glad he wouldn't recognize you!
Here's hoping the rest of the week goes a little more smoothly. Okay...a LOT more smoothly!
And CONGRATS on the dissertation! How long before now and defending? :)
